Hacking Democracy

"Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything." - Joseph Stalin

Here is a great article from about all the shadiness surrounding electronic voting machines and the new HBO documentary on the subject. Some quotes:

"Diebold has all you could ask for in a corporate enemy — ties to the Republican Party, a history of both lying to and currying favor with officials, a brusque and secretive posture in its dealings with critics and the press, and, worst of all, a pattern of technological ineptitude so startling you sometimes wonder if the people who work there are trying to sabotage the vote…Either they don’t know how vulnerable their equipment is (which they should, as various studies have discovered alarming security flaws), or they know and aren’t admitting it. Neither scenario inspires confidence."

"But actually, the problem is even worse than the film suggests. "Hacking Democracy" does not mention the work of Ed Felten, the respected Princeton computer security researcher who proved, in a September report, that it’s possible to install a kind of voting machine "virus" on Diebold’s memory cards. Felten’s study is a blockbuster: Conducted on the very same machines that will be used throughout Georgia and Maryland this year, Felten showed how attackers can secretly attach a vote-stealing program that spreads from voting machine to voting machine in a completely undetectable fashion."

Oil co’s forcing prices down out of fear that new leadership in Congress would investigate them?

Great Op-Ed in the Seattle Post Intelligencer - "Election, Economy, and the Price of Gas"
Some excerpts:

Enjoy the price of gasoline now, because when the Saudis lower production, we could go right back to the $3 nightmare of three months ago…Prince Bandar bin Sultan, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States, "told President Bush that the Saudis would cut oil prices to ensure a strong economy for Election Day." This prediction has come to fruition…

U.S. oil company executives also possess the power to allow price drops for the election. They have enough room to play — including last year’s collective $100 billion in record profits and Exxon Mobil’s own near record $10.6 billion profits this past quarter. Oil executives are full of fear over new leadership in a Congress that would investigate them.

They are particularly afraid of Rep. Charles Rangel chairing the Ways and Means Committee. Rangel could ask: Why do companies that generate record profits from U.S. consumers receive $7.2 billion in government subsidies? Why was U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, then Republican House leader, allowed to hold open a five-minute floor vote in the House for 48 minutes until some $2.6 billion in tax breaks for the major oil companies were approved by a two-vote margin? Just this week we learned of the administration’s refusal to pursue hundreds of millions in fees for offshore drilling.

Chrome Children: Live Hiphop is Good for your Soul

Chrom Children

iiight iiight iiight…where to begin? First off, its imperative that everyone reading understand that live hiphop, and I dont mean Luda or Hov [no disrespect, I have their albums too], but real hiphop LIVE is a therapeutic experience. Think you’re not a hiphop fan? Or not an ‘underground’ fan? Well, I dont care. When you’re done here go find tickets to a show, so you can see what I’m sayin, cuz it can’t be explained in this post. All I know is that hiphop speaks to people. So check it.

This post has been inspired by the Stones Throw CHROME CHILDREN TOUR which we here at MNP peeped last night in the Bean. Between J Rocc rippin it on the decks, Peanut Butter Wolf mixing oldschool videos [yeah, I said VIDEOS son] and Madlib/Lord Quas holdin down on the mic, I damn near lost my mind.

But in particular, we’re giving props and a big shout out to PERCEE P, a true ninja in MNP fashion. This dude walked around the crowd for half the show sellin his own CDs. He’s his own street team! I normally resist the urge to buy albums at concerts, but how can you say no when the man is sellin it himself? I had to go to the ATM between sets and hit him up after he went on [was SICK, by the way…ripped it], and bought his last copy off him. And talk about keepin it real, this ish was on a regular ass CD with the title hand written, mixtape style. And now I’ve been bumpin it all morning. ‘…lyrics worse than acid, what we got, scorchin hot, few drops for ya casket, skills are mastered, you bastard. leave you stretched out like elastic…’. Go check him out.

Lastly…know where a great place to act as MNP street team is? HIPHOP SHOWS [any shows, really]. Print out the flyer image and help out the fam.

My Ninja, Please! 10/31/06: For Fallafel and Honor

Happy All Hallows Eve my ninjas and ninja-baby’s. I hope ya’ll got your costumes ready for tonight, the spirits come out. This is one of the only nights of the year that’s it’s appropriate (and furthermore mnp-approved) to dress up like a ninja. Just don’t take it too far or you might offend.

That being said, the following article is scarier than anything else koookiecrumbles (our resident ghost) cooked up for today’s Halloween special. mnp is taking you ghouls to school. So everybody put your masks on and give this one a proper my ninja, please!!

Whether standing in a line or in the parking lot, mugs are getting stabbed.

Snipes on the Run: Part 2

Last we heard the Grand Master himself was snapped in Namibia, a country without an extradition treaty with the U.S.

Here’s the pic:

Of course we can’t actually confirm that it’s him, but if it is, we certainly don’t condone his brazen non-use of disguise. Maybe it’s the post-op photo. Face… offff.

The next bright light Snipes faces, of course, might be that of U.S. marshals seeking his arrest, as he is wanted here on charges of tax fraud. Joanne Reay, one of the producers of "Gallowwalker," the film on which Snipes is working in Nambia, told the Associated Press today, "As far as we understand, Wesley is not going to be arrested in Namibia." What’s more, Snipes is expected to stay in Namibia until December.

According to Reay, Snipes is not staying at the same luxurious lodge at which Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie stayed when Jolie was pregnant and gave birth to their daughter Shiloh Nouvel this summer.

Well that’s certainly a relief.

My Ninja, Please! 10/26/06: Cammo Day at School

This school in Florida does some type of anti-drug week every year to commemorate some dude who died back in the 80’s [I know you like the abridged version].AA Basically some teacher decided that it was a good idea for all the kids to wearAAmilitary fatiguesAAto school to symbolize the "fight against drugs."AA

"Hey, Cooper, guess who forgot their fatigues?"
"Probably that loser girl, Emily.AA Let’s show her how we do down here in Guantanamo"

First of all, my silly ninja, it’s called the "war on drugs"… and it involves real troops in cammo’s, not school children.AA Yes, motherfudgers are (and have been since back in the day)AAdying as a result of this war itself, not to even mention the current war going on.

And even in peace time, when is it appropriate for kids to come to school like it’s Kuwait in ’94, whatAAwith all the damned school shootings going down these days!AA I would like to say to the principal of this school, My Ninja, Please use your common sense.

"I’m just not getting the camouflage," said Angie Arellano, whose sixth-grade son opted out. "With everything going on in the world, I really don’t get it." She suggested more lighthearted alternatives, such as "wear your jeans inside out" or "wear opposite shoes." She said she planned to have a long talk with her son about war and violence in response to the event.
