"Imperial Power" Auctions

HONG KONGaAmong Chinese collectors of antiquities, power and patriotism sell, or at least that is the assumption Sotheby’s is making as it prepares for the spring auction season next month.

A collection of rare objects owned by Qing dynasty emperors will fall under the hammer, including a white jade seal carved for Emperor Qianlong that is expected to fetch more than US$6.5 million. Other imperial memorabilia for sale will include an eighteenth-century ceremonial pearl necklace and a ruyi scepter carved of boxwood, both believed to have been owned by Emperor Yongzheng.

The theme of the promotional materials, "Imperial Power," is designed to appeal to collectors from China keen to buy artwork and antiquities from their own country, said Nicolas Chow, Sotheby’s senior director for China and Southeast Asia. Many are business people, often with "a clear sense they are buying their history back," he said.

For these buyers, an association with power and authority carries more clout than the usual approach taken with Western buyers of Asian collectibles. That approach is summed up by the title of a catalog for the same April 8 Hong Kong auction presented to Sotheby’s European and North American clients: "Objects of Contemplation."

Francois Curiel on Christie’s Asia

HONG KONG- A bell rang out in the auction world late last month when Christie’s formally announced that world-renowned auctioneer Francois Curiel, a 40-year Christie’s veteran and leading jewelry expert, would be appointed president of the company’s Asia operation and director of its international jewelry department. Charming and driven, Curiel seems the perfect candidate to lead Christie’s expansion in the region given his success developing the auction house in New York (where he launched jewelry sales in 1977) and then Paris (where, as chairman of Christie’s France, he initiated a vast program of auctions in 2001). His arrival in Hong Kong is a clear indication of just how valuable Asia and particularly Mainland China has now become to the world’s leading auction houses. During his first week on the job, I sat down with Curiel in his Hong Kong office to talk about his formidable history with Christie’s, his plans for their future in Asia, and the Vivid Pink, the record-smashing diamond he sold at Christie’s in Hong Kong last fall.

Latin American art auction fetches $11 million

labateyfuego.png

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Latin American art works fetched a total of more than $11 million in a comparatively strong sale that set five world auction records for the artists, Christie’s said.

Virgilio Garza, Christie’s Latin American chief, credited the excitement about the Thursday evening sale to the top three selling works, all from the 1940s and rarely available to the market.

"That really brought people in," he told Reuters, "People flew in from all over."

A rediscovered 1943 masterpiece of Cuban modernism by artist Mario Carreno called "Fuego en el Batey," (Fire in the Farm), was the top seller at $2.1 million. A family on Long Island unexpectedly offered the work, whose whereabouts had been unknown.

Layered in thick swipes of industrial car enamel, it depicts a panic-stricken mother handing a child to a man on horseback fleeing a burning farm. Its swirling colorful arcs and the horse’s blurred motion recall the Italian Futurists, Garza said.

Barack Obama’s 2005 Chrysler 300C

titleimg.jpg

You might not be a future president, but you can drive like one.

President-elect Barack Obama’s 2005 Chrysler 300C is up for auction on eBay.

The current owner is Illinois restaurant manager Tim O’Boyle. Bidding on the ’05 Chrysler starts at $100,000.

Under eBay’s "Buy It Now" option, the price is a cool $1 million.

Of course, a new 300C is a lot cheaper, aroundAA$27,000.

O’Boyle bought the car after Obama had leased it.

O’Boyle says the Obama car has less than 21,000 miles on it and is in great shape.
