How to Spot an Agent

cryptome.org looks into why CIA agents are stationed in embassies worldwide (by Presidential order- especially in the third world). What to look for? Well, exotic-looking cipher locks usually cover the outside doors of an side-by-side CIA office, "Political officers" usually stick together, have a premium health insurance plan and keep loud sounds on to deter bugging.

Cross-referencing records with the method of the author of this article, John Marks, can lead to uncovering (at least in 1978).

Furthermore, resisting on "national security" grounds, the Agency has avoided reductions in personnel and has even continued to expand. Recommendations, cooperation and other considerations are part of the equation when determining whether or not a "private citizen" should or should not be linked with the government.

Everything argues for having the intelligence agent in the embassy - everything, that is, except the need to keep his existence secret. The question then becomes whether it is really that important to keep his existence secret - which, in turn, depends on how important his clandestine activities are.

To paraphrase Mae West, covert has nothing to do with it- the question is do we need a new type of Agency for accurate global information extraction?

Quantum Tunneling

Quantum mechanics is one of the least understood phenomena in science for it centers around shifting laws of action and reaction. Matter and waves share characteristics, and the universe as we know is understood as an evolution of atoms after the big bang. The quantum universe drives a paradigm shift in technology and particularly in computer technology. Indeed, the process of quantum tunneling is already replacing the laws of microelectronics currently essential to the operation of Intel processors in PCs. A "tunnel" connects two identical spaces in which images of the audience are projected and distorted. The visitor swipes a finger over a specified surface, leaving a genetic trace. While doing so, the visitor’s image is captured and presented in conglomeration with the face of another visitor. The recognizable faces are juxtaposed and become distorted. When another visitor passes through the tunnel, the facial images are again disturbed and altered, fractured into particles and waves.

World’s First Gold Bar ATM Machines

Sitting inside theAKempinski Emirates Palace Hotel on the West End Corniche, this machine will draw tourists and locals just to gawk at it, and who knows if security will be needed for people who actually want to use it to grab a gold bar to go. It’s actually calledAGold To Go, developed by a German, and it monitors the daily gold price ($1,245 an ounce yesterday!) and "offers small bars up to 10 grams or coins with customized designs." TheAfirst machines appeared in Frankfurt Airport a year ago, and now they’re gaining steam.

Are Cameras the New Guns?

The move to stop recording of police misconduct:

In response to a flood of Facebook and YouTube videos that depict police abuse, a new trend in law enforcement is gaining popularity. In at least three states (Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland), it is now illegal to record an on-duty police officer even if the encounter involves you and may be necessary to your defense, and even if the recording is on a public street where no expectation of privacy exists.

Museum Security and the Thomas Crown Affair

Eric C. Michaud, writes of the allure of stolen art and goes deeper- how can museums better secure their collections whileA "dealing" with the aftermath of the embarrassment of being a part of a breach?

Over the years, I’ve daydreamed about stealing a Vermeer, a Picasso, or Rembrandt.A It tickles me, as much as watching the reboot of The Thomas Crown Affair.1A Why is it, do you suppose, so much fun (despite the obvious immorality) to think about stealing a world renowned piece off the wall of a major metropolitan museum?A Is it the romantic thoughts of getting away with it, walking past infrared detectors, and pressure sensors ala Indiana Jones with the sack of sand to remove the idol without triggering the security system?A Is it the idea of snatching items with such fantastic prices, where the romance of possessing an item of such value is less intoxicating than selling it to a private collector for it to never be seen again?A I suspect others share my daydreams as they watch theater or hear of a brazen daylight heist at museums around the world, or from private collections.

With typically 85%-99% of a museum's total holdings not being on display, most pieces stolen or legitimate are never seen by the public. Stolen art can serve as black market chips to trade and they usually involve insiders who use the museum’s closed software systems as a point of vulnerable entry. In the endgame:

By publicizing what is missing or stolen, cooperative security can take place.

What Is Intelligence, Anyway?

Isaac Asimov on the blind intelligence, and deaf society.

My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in and of the fact that a small subsection of that society has managed to foist itself on the rest as an arbiter of such matters.
