Luke Walton on Kobe and LeBron
Best player in the game? Kobe. Is it undisputed? Probably not, but there isn’t any denying Kobe is the most accomplished player in the league.
You hear a lot of chatter in the league who is better? Kobe or LeBron? LeBron or Kobe. LeBron is the reigning NBA MVP. The Nike muppets commercials (which I love) also play up the rivalry angle and the Kobe-LeBron matchup is the main reason a lot of people will be tuning in to ABC on Christmas Day.
When you talk about these two great players, you have to look at the ultimate barometer, — championships. And when it comes to championships, there isn’t a rivalry.

Senator calls for action on Yemen
WASHINGTON - A Senate committee chairman says the United States should consider whether air strikes, armed drones and clandestine operations are necessary in Yemen to defeat al Qaeda militants there.
Yesterday’s remark by Democratic Senator Carl Levin, who chairs the armed services committee, was a rare admission by a senior official that direct US military action in Yemen is possible, if it has not happened already. Such operations are highly classified.
Levin was speaking after a three-day trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The White House and Pentagon have said they have no plans to send ground troops to Yemen, and Yemen has made it clear it would not want them. Remaining options would include covert strikes against al Qaeda targets and increased aid to help train and equip Yemeni security forces.

Sake Brewer Seeks Fertile Field
When you raise a glass of champagne, sparkling wine or whatever fine bubbly at the end of the week, spare a thought for Masa Shiroki’s New Year plans.
The Vancouver-based entrepreneur has been working for a few years to elevate the ranks of Japanese-style sake, brewing it in small batches from a Granville Island shop, and trying to get it on high-end shelves and tables.
This year, in a bid to qualify for a significantly better tax rebate, and in response to consumers wanting to buy more locally sourced products, the owner of Artisan Sake Maker started growing sake rice here in B.C. instead of importing the premium ingredient from Japan.
Hotel de Glace, Canada’s Ice Hotel
At the beginning of December each year, workers build the entire hotel’s rooms and columns, furniture and sculptures out of ice and snow. For the opening this January, when the hotel celebrates its 10th anniversary, workers used 15,000 tons of snow and 500 tons of ice.
