"Channel Surfing the World Wide Web: The ‘Stumble Effect'"

a€oe1,000 channels and still nothing to watch,a€A is the common grumble during this grueling workout routine. Yet we still pay upwards of $100.00 per month for hundreds of cable channels, hundreds more a€oemusica€A channels, and on demand movies, etc. But the paradigm works. Advertisers get their campaigns in front of many people who are a€oechannel surfinga€A despite the fact that the expert channel surfer can spend as little as 2 seconds on a channel before moving on to the next one down the list.

This paradigm, however, never really had a successful extension on the internet. At first a website was at the mercy of a few static pages that linked to it. One would need to either know the website name verbatim or know where a link was to get to it. Fortunately, the number of websites to actually visit was still small in number.

batman device

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-(BUSINESS WIRE)-The ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound used to be the stuff of comic-book fantasy. Nathan Ball, a 23-year-old graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and this yeara€™s winner of the $30,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, has invented a device that makes the fantasy a reality.

With the help of Balla€™s ATLAS Powered Rope Ascender, a fully loaded firefighter could reach the top of a 30-story building in only 30 seconds, compared to the six minutes or more it often takes to trudge up stairs with 80 to 100 pounds of equipment. The device, which is the size of a hand-held power tool, can lift a 250-pound load more than 600 feet into the air at nearly 10 feet per second, all on a single battery charge.

a€oeIngenuity, creativity and passion seem to course through Natea€™s blood,a€A said Merton Flemings, director of the Lemelson-MIT Program, which sponsors the annual award. a€oeHis battery-powered rope ascender and needle-free injection technology both have life-saving capabilities and many commercial applications.a€A

a€oeNate is also an inspiring and committed mentor for young inventors. This combination of attributes made him our top choice for this yeara€™s $30,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize,a€A Flemings added.

floriculturists

According to floriculturists, they are right; if the mixture of soda and water is in the correct proportion, a bouquet will remain bright, because the combination provides the flowers with the water and food they need. "The 7-Up formula works really well," says Susan Han, a professor in the plant, soil and insect science department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Vodka also works as a flower preservative by interfering with the plant’s ripening process but it is less practical to use.
