Economy Down, Recruiting Up
[I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to feel about this poster…]
The faltering US economy is fueling a dramatic turnaround in military recruiting, with new statistics showing that the Army is experiencing the highest rate of new enlistments in six years.
The Army exceeded its goals each month from October through January - the first quarter of the new fiscal year - for both the active-duty Army and the Army Reserve, according to figures compiled by the US Army Recruiting Command.
Officials said it is the first time since the first quarter of fiscal year 2003, before the start of the Iraq War, that the Army has started out its recruiting year on such a high note.

A New Internet? Let’s Hope Not
What a new Internet might look like is still widely debated, but one alternative would, in effect, create a a€oegated communitya€A where users would give up their anonymity and certain freedoms in return for safety. Today that is already the case for many corporate and government Internet users. As a new and more secure network becomes widely adopted, the current Internet might end up as the bad neighborhood of cyberspace. You would enter at your own risk and keep an eye over your shoulder while you were there.
Sounds awful.
John Markoff writes for the New York Times last week on the current state of the internet, and suggests that in order to ensure security and privacy we should ‘start over’. The solution he supports? A ‘gated community’ where you lose anonimity [read: privacy, fool] and freedom in order to protect your credit card numbers.
Sounds like a government scam to recreate the internet in a way that allows for closer scrutiny of the actions of individuals - trampling our rights. Not only is the idea that you can be ‘safe’ online hilarious [hackers, or whoever, will still get your information on a government run/controlled internet], but the idea that the government would do this for the sake of the common citizen is a joke. Say goodbye to torrents and filesharing, as well as any sites the government [or whoever ‘they’ put in charge] deem malicious / unsavory.

Bristol Palin: Slightly Retahded
The daughter of a conservative evangelical christian politician saying abstinence isn’t realistic? Priceless.
But really tho, that’s why you got pregnant? Because keeping it in your pants is unrealistic? The MNP crew doesn’t practice abstinence as a rule, and we’re not all running around with babies. Hmm…I wonder why that is…oh yeah…
WRAP IT UP, YOU FECKIN DUMIES.
This chick is the poster child for teaching ‘safe’ and ‘responsible’ sex eduction in schools. Because abstinence is unrealistic - some youngins will still be gettin’ it on. The answer seems pretty simple to a ninja - teach the babies that they don’t want to be havin’ babies, and to use a condom / birth control. Shit, I’d advise giving all girls in high school ‘the pill’ like daily vitamins before abstinence as an answer to teen pregnancy [note: I don’t really think all high school girls should be on the pill, necessarily].
Also, a message to Bristol: sex isn’t simpler if you ‘wait 10 years’ - having children, however, might be. Simpler still? A trojan. Cheap, easy to get, simple to use, pretty effective.
[And for those of you who think we shouldn’t talk trash to a teenage girl - her fam decided it was cool to parade her in front of the cameras, and expect no response due to her age - which is BS]

Crowd Surfing in China
Two years ago, Chinese President Hu Jintao called on Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members to a€oeassert supremacy over online public opinion, raise the level and study the art of online guidance and actively use new technologies to increase the strength of positive propaganda.a€A
After Hu’s speech, Communist Party officials and the State Council issued an official call for a€oecomrades of good ideological and political character, high capability and familiarity with the Internet to form teams of Web commentators … who can employ methods and language Web users can accept to actively guide online public opinion.a€A
The CCP has hired thousands of freelance Internet propagandists whose job is to infiltrate chat rooms, message boards and comment areas on the Internet posing as ordinary users to voice support for the agenda and interest of the CCP. They praise Chinaa€™s one-party system and condemn anyone who criticizes Chinaa€™s policy on Tibet. They comment aggressively on news reports about Chinaa€™s food-safety problems, relations with Taiwan, suppression of bird-flu and AIDS information, Internet censorship, jailing of dissidents, support of Sudana€™s military in Darfur and other sensitive topics. Comments applaud the Chinese government and slam its critics, all using scripts and lines approved by the party.
The BBC calls these freelance propagandists China’s 50 Cent Party. The Guardian newspaper calls it the 50 Cent Army. (50 Cent isna€™t a rapper in this case, but a reference to the pay: 50 Chinese "cents" per post, which is equivalent to about 7 US cents). Other names include a€oered vestsa€A and the a€oered vanguard.a€A
Some estimates claim that the 50 Cent Army includes a whopping 300,000 people. If thata€™s accurate, China’s freelance propagandists exceed in number the total populations of 47 countries.

Leap Second Added
All of you wondering why you keep getting thirty lashes upon walking into work now will have an extra second to get your sh!t together.AA Don’t forget to synchronize your watches!AA For more information, not to mention scientific explanations, click here (and for the nutshell, read below).
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Those eager to put 2008 behind them will have to hold their good-byes for just a moment this New Year’s Eve.
The world’s official timekeepers have added a "leap second" to the last day of the year on Wednesday, to help match clocks to the Earth’s slowing spin on its axis, which takes place at ever-changing rates affected by tides and other factors.
The U.S. Naval Observatory, keeper of the Pentagon’s master clock, said it would add the extra second on Wednesday in coordination with the world’s atomic clocks at 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC.
That corresponds to 6:59:59 p.m. EST (23:59:59 GMT), when an extra second will tick by — the 24th to be added to UTC since 1972, when the practice began.

Universal Human Rights
So we’re a couple of days off on this - but this month [December 10th to be exact] marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since this is the truth right here - more so than our ‘beloved’ constitution - we really suggest you go read the entire document.
Equality? Freedom from torture? Yeah - this thing is still way ahead of it’s time my people.
