The Hackable Grid…
In the past week, there’s been a good deal of publicity about security holes in the Smart Grid, making it a potential hacker’s playground, as well as an entry point into enterprise networks. Here’s more fuel for the fire: A year ago, the CIA claimed that hackers had invaded the networks of power utilities outside the U.S., causing power outages in several cities, and issuing extortion demands.
Make sure you read that post, for, it is bananas.
And now, an unrelated quote:
First, it is slightly cheaper; and secondly it has the words Don’t Panic inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover.
I hope that made you feel better after reading that post.

Internet @ Work Makes Better Employees
I want to dedicate this post to all those IT ninjas who act like allowing access to NPR or Facebook / LinkedIn is going to bring their company’s network crashing down in a fiery blaze - and advocate for browsing the web on ‘your own time’. What time is that? This is America - nobody has ‘free time’ to be interneting in this bitch…that’s why we need to do it at work!
Caught Twittering or on Facebook at work? It’ll make you a better employee, according to an Australian study that shows surfing the Internet for fun during office hours increases productivity.
The University of Melbourne study showed that people who use the Internet for personal reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive that those who do not.
Study author Brent Coker, from the department of management and marketing, said "workplace Internet leisure browsing," or WILB, helped to sharpened workers’ concentration.
"People need to zone out for a bit to get back their concentration," Coker said on the university’s website (www.unimelb.edu.au/)
"Short and unobtrusive breaks, such as a quick surf of the Internet, enables the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total net concentration for a days’ work, and as a result, increased productivity," he said.

Obama, Just Saying ‘No’
In the not-so-important but definitely over-hyped Obama ‘online townhall’ - where the President took questions in the form of Youtube videos voted-on by internet users - Obama took the time to address a question that received a great number of votes, but that he would not be discussing in-depth: legalization of marijuana.
Now, I didn’t expect this President to legalize marijuana - but his age, and previous comments about ‘inhaling frequently’ had me thinking he wouldn’t end up dropping some condescending bullshit like "I don’t know what this says about the online audience".
Well, Mr President, I’ll tell you what it says about the online audience - the audience that you exploited to elect you [you have a feckin’ Twitter account - give me a break], and that you’ve made such a show of addressing in this silly ‘online townhall’ [and you know, forget the question itself - this could have been any topic, and just happens to be about marijuana use]. It says that we have legitimate views that you need to take the time to adequately and professionally address. It says that by electing you we thought certain completely valid issues would once again be discussed intelligently and maturely by the American people and our government. But instead, the question is the punchline of a Washington joke.
You’re looking more and more Presidential everyday, Mr. Obama - and that shit isn’t a compliment.

Shamwow-Guy Assaults Hooker!?!
[ update: I must add that barstoolsports has the best reportage on this matterAA -ed. ]
I’m assuming many of you have seen these commercials - this is pretty ridiculous. Good luck selling towels from here on out…
Shlomi told cops he paid [Sasha] Harris about $1000 in cash after she "propositioned him for straight sex." Shlomi said that when he kissed Harris, she suddenly "bit his tongue and would not let go." Shlomi then punched Harris several times until she released his tongue. The affidavit…notes that during the 4 AM fight Harris sustained facial fractures and lacerations all over her face…. After freeing his tongue, a bleeding Shlomi ran to the [hotel] lobby, where security summoned cops. Harris refused to cooperate with officers, who recovered $930 from her purse.

Not Exactly A ‘Thumb’ Drive…
Yes, this is for real - a Finnish software developer Jerry Jalava [who lost his ring-finger in an accident] has replaced his finger with a USB thumb drive.
My ninjas, PLEASE.
Concealed under the prosthetic fingernail is a 2GB USB drive, ready to pop into any computer. And no, the USB finger isn’t permanently attached to his hand. Kinda disturbing if you happen to share a computer with him.
Always the developer, Javala is looking to upgrade his finger with wireless technology, RFID tag, and more storage. Just think a€" a Bluetooth finger.

In the Building + Feeling Himself
Can anyone in their right mind still be an A-Rod fan [I mean, obviously other than A-Rod himself]? Here he is in the recent issue of Details magazine - seemingly kissing himself in the mirror.
Is he prepping for a career move? Something involving stripping for men, perhaps?
