Five Thousand Years of Debt
An excerpt from Eurozine:
This was the age that saw the emergence of coinage, as well as the birth, in China, India and the Middle East, of all major world religions. From the Warring States period in China, to fragmentation in India, and to the carnage and mass enslavement that accompanied the expansion (and later, dissolution) of the Roman Empire, it was a period of spectacular creativity throughout most of the world.

Women in Technology
Who are the role models out there for women looking to get into technology…
The reason why girls are not getting involved in tech is because they are told "be perfect or don’t try" by the same noisy people who claim to be advocating for them. There are some bright spots in this whole mess— Girls in Tech does great work, as does Girl Developer IT— but most of the self appointed shepherds spend too much time deflecting attention away from imperfect women succeeding in tech and waiting for their geek messiah to appear and prove once and for all that we belong here too. Blog Fail
Blogs can be dismissed just as quickly. In many ways, blogs are like candy; here today, forgotten tomorrow. Blogs are disposable, they’re "impulse purchases" and flings as opposed to long-term commitments.
Maybe there should be bigger barriers to entry to avoid the building up of digital dust. Perhaps people should take a blog test to weed out the un-serious. Maybe blogs should have a three-month trial period that would cause them to evaporate if there were long periods of inactivity. That way, the blogosphere wouldn’t have so much litter. (Source)

What is Web 2.0?
The difference between this Web 2.0 model and the previous one is directly equivalent to the difference between a rain forest and a desert. One of the primary reasons we value tropical rain forests is because they waste so little of the energy supplied by the sun while running massive nutrient cycles. Most of the solar energy that saturates desert environments gets lost, assimilated by the few plants that can survive in such a hostile climate. Those plants pass on enough energy to sustain a limited number of insects, which in turn supply food for the occasional reptile or bird, all of which ultimately feed the bacteria. But most of the energy is lost.
