Live Action Akira Announced!

cover-akira.jpg

This was posted on the politricks page by our ninja Phil, and I just thought that it needed to be here too - because AKIRA was/is ill, and a live action could be ridiculous.

And, who, you ask, is behind this attempt at glory? Leonardo DiCaprio is said to be producing it. I know, weird to me too. I have to say, if this is pulled off, it could be tremendous. For those of you who haven’t read or seen Akira you should really do yourself a favor and get your self into it through one medium or another. Fantastic story. This is the trailer for the anime movie:

Fidel Retires

From the crates of music.mnp:

fidel.jpg
[audio:http://www.myninjaplease.com/music/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/the-skatalites-fidel-castro.mp3]

As you probably know by now, Fidel Castro announced his retirement today, declaring that he would not attempt or accept another term as Cuba’s leader. Like him or not, you cant deny the historical import of this larger-than-life figure, so I figured this event warranted a little drop. One legacy of the revolution has been the advances in music, cinema and visual art to emerge from the island, including some of my personal favorite films by the likes of TomA¡s GutiA©rrez Alea and countless quality records released over the years on the Areito imprint. Below is a clip from director Santiago AAlvarez‘s 1965 short film "Now" which deals with racial discrimination and violence in the United States during the civil rights era. Known for his innovative use of newsreel footage and photography in his works, AAlvarez was possibly the most talented propagandist to ever create a film. In "Now", he combines stock footage and memorable photographs with the powerful voice of singer/songwriter Lena Horne.

Human Ocean Impact

From the pages of green.mnp:

So, I was looking for an uploadable version of this BBC ‘fly-over’ video of some work that has been done by researchers on the severity of human impact on the oceans. This map illustrates the areas of impact in the oceans - scary.

impactedoceans.jpg
Only about 4% of the world’s oceans remain undamaged by human activity, according to the first detailed global map of human impacts on the seas.

However, I got distracted by this series of videos from the 2003 BBC Horizon show The Big Chill. This is basically all old (and at times prophetic) news by now, talking about the infamous ocean conveyor belt and the dire consequences that may ensue if it shuts off. But it gives a good bit of perspective on how little we still know and how much can happen in 5 years. Think about all the craziness that has gone down since 2003 concerning climate change - climatically, politically, intellectually, technologically.

Oh, and watch out for the endearingly geeky clone of a certain red-bearded ninja.

Brad Ascalon‘s Glass and Wood Spindle Table. We saw this on top of MoCo Loco and just had to post it. Check out the rest of the MoCo submissions. We might need some of these for the MNP offices!
