The Chicago Billboard fiasco: Dona€™t Fall into the Cama€™ron Trap
For once, I was happy that no one was lured into the ridiculous trap of defending free speech against the likes of censorious housewives and hypocritical religious leaders. The worst part of the ongoing hip hop censorship debate is how easily rappers like Cama€™ron, KRS-One and otherwise astute black leaders respond to the simplest baiting tactics perpetrated by pastors, CNN, Fox News and the like. For kicks, Oprah joined in on the fun by bringing Rusty Simmons and Common in for a good old-fashioned tar and feather job delivered by posturing media members like Stanley Crouch and similarly out-of-touch debaters. Typically the panel segments proceed something like this:
1) Host brings up incendiary topic
2) Conservative pundit sneers, offering flimsy paid-by-the-minute talking points
3) Rapper/cultural commentator gets defensive, backs into a corner
4) Shouting and interruptions commence
5) Segment ends
