Green washing

Wandering around the exhibits, I started to recognize something that is now quite familiar to me after two months on the job. It was peculiar how the big car companies were draping themselves in the trappings of being a€oegreen.a€A The biggest eye opener was this exhibit from General Motors, with a large display of huge SUVs and trucks arrayed along a large, sweeping structure that proclaimed, a€oeLive Green, Go Yellow.a€A

The entire exhibit, dedicated to promoting GMa€™s line of flex-fuel trucks (where are the cars?), started to get me thinking. People cana€™t possibly believe that by putting corn-based ethanol into huge, heavy trucks and SUVs they have now checked the box that says they are a a€oegreen consumer,a€A can they?

"A Doomsday Business Theory: Will we take two steps back."

In recent years there has been a lot of discussion about the changes to the economy resulting from the retirement of the baby boomers, the coming environmental difficulties related to global warming, the mitigating effects of globalization, and the increasing price of oil. Each of these items could have a serious negative affect on both U.S. and global commerce if they come true.

Assuming that all of the doomsday analysts that believe in any of these aforementioned difficulties were correct, few could imagine a day when all of them were true at the same time. What would society and business look like? Who would be successful and who would suffer under the new economic realities? Is it all simply made up in our mind or is it something that could be very true and disastrous? Let us discuss each of these items separately.
