Interactive Nolli Map of Rome (1748)

The 1748 Map of Rome, byAGiambattista Nolli is widely regarded by scholars as one of the most important historical documents of the city ever created and serves to geo-reference a vast body of information to better understand the Eternal City and its key role in shaping Western Civilization. Marjolijn Boterenbrood

Marjolijn, a Dutch artist, sent us some documentation of her project exploring a neighborhood in Haarlem called Haarlem Oost (Haarlem East). Approaching the area as a terra incognita, she explored the area by taking walks, talking to locals, finding seeds, watching, listening, and smelling. After her investigations she created a series of maps: a map of smells, a map documenting the birthplaces of various residents, a fear map, a fauna map, even a map to hidden treasures in the neighborhood. She also invented a drawing machine that allowed residents of Haarlem Oost to contribute their own ideas of place and later invited nine other artists to contribute their own investigations of the area.
