Ali - Frazier?

…more like Tyson-McNeely… literally.

I know I’m a bit behind on this… okay like… 6 months… but I posted this because I wanted to ask: doesn’t it look like these two are about to kiss?

In your free time, you used to watch it, too

YouTube Preview ImageSince it’s memorial day and all, I figured, why not take a look back into the past a little bit? I dunno if this guy classifies as a veteran or not (bad joke) but he was certainly a childhood hero. Along with Jim the Hacksaw Duggan.

Come to think of it… that’s maybe a little bit sad.

The Graffiti of the Philanthropic Class

bookertwashingtonmnp.jpg

That’s what the New York Times, via an article today by theater critic Charles Isherwood, calls the various plaques and signs honoring philanthropists’ donations to cultural venues, schools, hospitals, charities, libraries, parks, museums, etc.

With his personal interest focused on performing arts, Isherwood concentrates primarily on the "naming" of theatrical venues; but the implications of his lede line: "WHATEVER happened to Anonymous?" include the many other instances in which benefactors are identified by name.

One can only wonder if the Times’s resentment of the practice might stem in some small part from the curious absence of the name Sulzberger on any local buildings or public facilities. Certainly, there are no hospital wings, university labs, concert halls, or charitable organizations widely known for affiliation with the Sulzbergers — even in the weekly Sunday Styles pages of the family’s own newspaper, a reader would be hard pressed to see any photo of Pinch or pAAre among the attendees at charity balls, galas, and fundraisers. Which makes it unlikley that he and his family are anonymous donors.

Indeed, as far as a quick mental review by this lifelong New Yorker extends, there is no recollection of any public involvement of the Sulzbergers — certainly one of the city’s premier business dynasties — in any philanthropic endeavors save one. That’s the Times’s annual "Neediest Cases" drive, in which readers are asked to donate money for which the Times later takes credit by turning the funds over to various organized charities.

In a city where names from Andrew Carnegie to more recent philanthropists like Weill, Rose, Paley, Tisch, and many others are firmly attached to the walls and canopies of so many public structures, would it be so terrible if the Times’s Isherwood stopped whining so loudly about the recognition given to public-spirited citizens and spent his energy entreating his boss to become one of them?

California Overturns Gay Marriage Ban

…and people are mad happy about Ellen getting married. I understand the symbolic reasons and stuff but there ain’t no reason to be all extra elated. I’m not sure Ellen figures into the percentage of gay/lesbian people who would benefit from the financial advantages of marriage and such.

But we will use the fact that California overturned its gay marriage ban as an excuse to post a video with Ellen in it. I love her and kind of wish she would marry me. Oh, and, f(*% discrimination!

HBO’s Recount

recountlogo01.gif

Starring Kevin Spacey, Bob Balaban, Ed Begley, Jr., Laura Dern, John Hurt, Denis Leary, Bruce McGill, and Tom Wilkinson, Recount brings viewers behind the scenes at the controversial Florida recount. This illuminating, hugely entertaining film pulls back the veil on the headlines to explore the human drama surrounding the most controversial presidential election in U.S. history.

Mixing news footage and verbatim dialogue into fictionalized re-creations, Recount examines the torturous process that culminated in the Supreme Court decision in Bush vs. Gore. The Republicans, led by charismatic Texan James Baker, seize the initiative as the case is tried in the judicial system and the court of public opinion. The Democrats play catch-up until Ron Klain, Gore’s former chief of staff, takes over and starts matching Baker’s political hardball with tough moves of his own. Mutual respect forms between the two as the fate of the presidency plays out among a colorful cast ranging from the impressive (appellate lawyer David Boies) to the maligned (Florida’s Secretary of State Katherine Harris).

Recount recreates many of the movers and shakers in the Florida fight. Among the Democrats are Ron Klain (Spacey), soldiering on despite being demoted as Gore’s Chief of Staff; Michael Whouley (Leary), Gore’s Chief Field Operative; Warren Christopher (Hurt), the onetime Secretary of State whose passivity eventually yields to Klain’s more forceful tactics; and David Boies (Begley), an appellate lawyer recruited to articulate the Democrats’ message. Republicans include James Baker (Wilkinson), another former Secretary of State with a will to win to match Klain’s; Ben Ginsberg (Balaban), the campaign’s Lead Counsel; Katherine Harris (Dern), Florida’s Secretary of State, remembered as much for her makeup as for her role in determining the winner; and Mac Stipanovich (McGill), a lobbyist with the moniker "Mac the Knife."

Recount is directed by Jay Roach (Meet the Fockers, Austin Powers films), and written by Danny Strong (best-known as an actor in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gilmore Girls). It was executive produced by Roach, EmmyA® winner Paula Weinstein (HBO’s Truman), HBO Films exec Len Amato (Blood Diamond), and OscarA® winner Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa). The producer is Michael Hausman (Brokeback Mountain). [HBO.COM]

In my opinion it’s a little bit late for mofo’s to be talking about this. It’s funny how we would call other nations "undemocratic" and send observers to their elections and whatnot, but, in our own country the same type of shenanigans goes down. All you have to do is watch the black box voting video to be disgusted, much less dig into what actually happens/happened. I love Kevin Spacey, though.

Here is the imdb page in case you’re interested in the cast list or something like that.

Sneak preview: Method Man’s graphic novel

HOW THE HELL DID A LEVIATHAN GET IN CITY SEWERS?" An important question a€" and there are few people I’d rather help me answer it than the Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man. Luckily, Mr. Mef is addressing this very issue in the new graphic novel he’s written with David Atchison and artist Sanford Greene. Titled simply Method Man, it won’t be on sale ’til July. But I’m lucky enough to have an eight-page excerpt sitting in front of me right now, and a€" well, let me just see if I can communicate a small taste of its awesomeness to you.

Okay, so, there’s an evil sea monster dwelling in the underground sewer system of "One Bad Ghetto, USA." And man, did that thing pick the wrong kung-fu-obsessed rapper to mess with. In the excerpt, Method Man a€" er, his thinly veiled alter ego, mystical detective/"murder priest" Mosley Paine a€" accidentally discovers it swimming around. (This would be when he produces the exclamation that opened this post.) Paine pumps a few bullets into the beast… and then the excerpt cuts off. Right in the middle of the action!

Now I’m fiending to read the rest of the story, not to mention the separate graphic novels that Wu brothers GZA and Ghostface Killah are reportedly working on as well. Who’s with me? And is it too much for me to ask that Meth record a new tune to soundtrack his monster-slaying adventures a€" a RZA-produced epic sampling Radiohead’s "Fog" (a.k.a. "Alligators in New York Sewers"), perchance? [popwatch.ew]
