The Library of Radiant Optimism

We started the library as way to gather, look at, and catalog a groundswell of optimistic and visionary activities in the late 1960s and early 1970s. We had discussions about the similarities between a handful of books we knew of, and the culture of Mess Hall, an experimental cultural center in Chicago that we have both been active in for over three years. Mess Hall is organized around an \"economy of generosity,? freely sharing information and materials. The books are important precursors to Mess Hall, embracing the grass roots exchange of information and themes of self and community empowerment. These books are written from the counter-culture. Their authors were interested in communicating their direct experience as it related to their experiments for living in harmony with the natural landscape, building sustainable communities, and so on. We were excited to read about practical applications of optimistic ideas for radical change, and to continue putting our own ideas into this tradition.

Santa to look for new home in 2040

A leading team of climatologists is arguing that the North Pole will be entirely ice-free by the year 2040, allowing ships to visit what was once one of the planet’s most inaccessible landscapes. The scientists say that some ice may still be found on the coastlines of Greenland and other smaller islands in the area, but the Artic Ocean itself will be open water. However, some claim the 2040 date is actually over-optimistic:
…a recent study by the Global Carbon Project suggests emissions are rising more than twice as fast as in 2000 which is likely to speed up ice-loss even further.

"The study findings may be an under estimate of when the Arctic summer ice might be all gone," he said. "It could well be their assumptions are more optimistic than they might be."

Circumcision cuts rate of HIV infection by 50%

Yet another study has shown that circumcision drastically reduces the rate of HIV infection. The trials of Kenya and Uganda of around 8,000 men each demonstrated a 50% reduction in the rate of HIV infection among heterosexual men who were circumcised (53% in Kenya and 48% in Uganda). This study comes on the heels of a South African study last year which looked at 3,280 heterosexual men and which saw a 60% drop in the incidence of new infections among the men who had been circumcised.
