NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — In the aftermath of a severe earthquake in Haiti late Tuesday, Twitter is playing a critical role in collecting donations to help disaster victims.

Fundraising efforts by the American Red Cross and rapper Wyclef Jean were two of the top 10 trending topics on Twitter early Wednesday. Both organizations asked Twitter users to text a number to make a donation that would be added to their cell phone bills.

The International Federation of the Red Cross estimated that 3 million people were affected by the 7.0-magnitude quake, the center of which was located near capital city Port-au-Prince.

Twitter lit up with posts from around the globe, including some tweets from Haitians who had no other way to communicate amid the chaos. Donation efforts on the site mobilized quickly amid the first natural disaster to strike since the social media site took off.

At about 6:30 p.m. ET Tuesday, the American Cross tweeted that it was pledging an initial $200,000 to assist those affected.

Swiss gets speed fine record

A Swiss millionaire has been handed down a record speeding fine of $290,000 by a court.

The man was reportedly caught driving a red Ferrari Testarossa at 137km/h (85mph) through a village.

The penalty was calculated based on the unnamed motorist’s wealth - assessed by the court as $22.7m - and because he was a repeat offender.

It is more than double Switzerland’s previous record speeding fine - handed to a Porsche driver in Zurich in 2008.

In the latest case, the motorist was clocked speeding 57km/h (35mph) faster than the limit, according to the cantonal court in St Gallen, eastern Switzerland.

"The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed," the court said in its judgement.

Swiss media reported that the man owns a villa with five luxury cars, including the Ferrari.

"More of this is true than you would believe," we’re told, just a few minutes into the movie version of The Men Who Stare At Goats, which opens today. But how many of the film’s outlandish military research projects really happened? Turns out there’s plenty of material in the movie which sticks quite close to the truth though reality is a bit more complicated.

The bailout crashed, and so did democracy

Democracy is not perfect, and one of its many imperfections is that voters tend to be ignorant. I don’t mean to be insulting. There are, after all, perfectly rational reasons for this ignorance. In a republic of 300 million, the chances of an individual vote affecting a national outcome are slim, and it makes little sense for the individual voter to invest scarce resources in learning about complicated issues, like health care or foreign policy or, just to pick another subject at random, the economy.

Japanese Whale Boat Sinks Ship

from slatest.slate.com :

Conservationists say a Japenese whaling boat intentionally sunk one of their ships during a "skirmish" in the Southern Ocean Wednesday. The Ady Gil, a boat that bears an uncanny resemblance to a stealth bomber, sank after a collision with a boat that provides security to Japanese whalers. The Japanese Fisheries Agency says the Ady Gil caused the crash; the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which operated the Ady Gil, says the Japanese rammed their boat, which has a history of harassing whalers with lasers, radar, and other space-age annoyances. The six crew members aboard the Ady Gil were rescued by a nearby Sea Shepherd vessel, and they vowed not to be intimidated by the incident. "If they think that our remaining two ships will retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the face of their extremism, they will be mistaken," a Sea Shepherd captain said. "We now have a real whale war on our hands."
