Modern jazz

Freedom, community, spirituality, finding your own voice a€" jazz means many things to many people.

All the more sad, then, to hear a genius like Ornette Coleman, who pioneered "free jazz" in the late ’50s, sound so stuck in the racial paradigms of the past.

Seemingly annoyed that IAJE was largely patronized by white academics a€" "If we were white people, would this conversation be the same?" he asked his hapless interviewer, saxophonist Greg Osby a€" Coleman answered questions about his music with obtuse, impenetrable riddles.

Coleman wasn’t the only one concerned about jazz becoming "too white." "I’m afraid I’m going to wake up one morning and hear that jazz was invented by [white trumpeter] Bix Beiderbecke," said Suzan Jenkins, president of Jazz Alliance International, a subsidiary advocacy group of IAJE.

"Unfortunately, I think jazz has fallen into the hands of a lot of white males," said flutist Anne Drummond, a Garfield grad, who is white and has made a successful career in New York. "It’s like a museum."

a€oeIt’s a major paradigm shift,a€A said Bill McFarlin, IAJE’s executive director.

a€oeIt may not be as huge as the shift from silent movies to talkies, but it’s a major turning point. What you’re seeing is the result of a shift in the way music is produced and consumed, and in the way people pay for it. One thing IAJE is trying to do is create a dialogue about where we’re going. The survival of the recording industry will be very important for jazz.a€A

Such adversity is nothing new for jazz, a music that has long been embraced around the world but is still striving for more respect and recognition here in the land of its birth. To help achieve that goal, the National Endowment for the Arts this year will dramatically boost the size of its a€oeNEA Jazz in the Schoolsa€A program. By the end of 2007, it will be available to 8 million high school students, up from 4 million last year.

Cow-tipping

a€oeThe static physics of the issue say . . . two people might be able to tip a cow,a€A she said. a€oeBut the cow would have to be tipped quickly a€" the cowa€™s centre of mass would have to be pushed over its hoof before the cow could react.a€A

Germanic

BERLIN, Jan. 16 (UPI) — The number of Germans converting to Islam has quadrupled in recent years, a German news magazine reported.

Between July 2004 and June 2005, some 4,000 Germans converted to Islam, four times more cases than in the year before, German news magazine Der Spiegel said in its latest issue, citing a study on Islamic life in Germany financed by the Interior Ministry to be published later this year.

While in recent years mostly women who married Muslim men converted, many people today deliberately and voluntarily converted, the report said, according to the magazine.

Many of the converts have previously been firm Christians who have lost their faith; others simply searched for an alternative.

The current debate around the integration of Muslims in Europe has put Islam on the forefront of Europe’s media scene, causing it to become more widely known as an alternative, Der Spiegel said.

Douglas Adams

AMERICAN ATHEISTS: There are quite a few lighthearted references to god and religion in your books (a€oe…2000 years after some guy got nailed to a treea€A). How has your Atheism influenced your writing? Where (in which characters or situations) are your personal religious thoughts most accurately reflected.

DNA: I am fascinated by religion. (Thata€™s a completely different thing from believing in it!) It has had such an incalculably huge effect on human affairs. What is it? What does it represent? Why have we invented it? How does it keep going? What will become of it? I love to keep poking and prodding at it. Ia€™ve thought about it so much over the years that that fascination is bound to spill over into my writing.

The Day TV Got Pirated

With no engineers on location at the transmission tower, WTTW employees looked on helplessly as the intruder seized control of their broadcast to say the following:

"He’s a freaky nerd!"
"This guy’s better than Chuck Swirsky." (a WGN -TV sportscaster at the time)
"Oh Jesus!"
"Catch the wave." (a reference to the New Coke marketing slogan)
"Your love is fading."
(hums the theme song to the 1959 TV series "Clutch Cargo")
"I stole CBS."
(unintelligible)
"Oh, I just made a giant masterpiece printed all over the greatest world newspaper nerds."
"My brother is wearing the other one."
"It’s dirty."
"They’re coming to get me!"
