Where are the Mennonites now?

As of 2003, there were an estimated 80,000 Old Colony Mennonites in Mexico.[22] These Mennonites descend from a mass migration in the 1920s of roughly 6,000 Old Colony Mennonites from the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In 1921, a Canadian Mennonite delegation arriving in Mexico received a privilegium, a promise of non-interference, from the Mexican government. This guarantee of many freedoms was the impetus that created the two original Old Colony settlements near Patos (Nuevo Ideal), Durango, and CuauhtA©moc, Chihuahua. via

Reclaiming King

The "I Have a Dream" speech has become a clichA©. It’s played every Martin Luther King Day and perhaps again during our so-called "Black History Month." With each passing year it feels more distant to me, more quaint. Its power has always been its simplicity and clarity, but its unassailable message has turned the man who delivered it into more of a myth than a human being made of flesh and blood.

I have vivid memories from my childhood of watching the famous speech in class and hearing an obnoxious white classmate of mine mock King’s dramatic tones and rhetoric while other white students chuckled uncomfortably. Aside from wanting to strangle this kid, in part because I was so fascinated with King, I also felt far removed from the black and white images on the screen and from the dire times during which he and his supporters lived. Even his name — the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., intimidated me. It felt more literary than literal. [read the rest]

`ambassador for peace’

CAIRO, Egypta€"Omar Osama bin Laden bears a striking resemblance to his notorious father a€" except for the dreadlocks that dangle halfway down his back. Then there’s the black leather biker jacket.

The 26-year-old does not renounce his father, Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, but in an interview he said there is a better way to defend Islam than militancy: Omar wants to be an "ambassador for peace" between Muslims and the West.

Omar a€" one of bin Laden’s 19 children a€" raised a tabloid storm last year when he married a 52-year-old British woman, Jane Felix-Browne, who took the name Zaina Alsabah. Now the couple say they want to be advocates, planning a 5,000-kilometre horse race across North Africa to draw attention to the cause of peace.

iPod Related Deaths

Here are some new PSAs by NSW Police in Australia, trying to raise awareness of the number of teens who are killed by cars while crossing the street wearing iPods.

My [younger] ninjas, PLEASE! Be aware of your surroundings while walking down the street, rockin’ out.

Quote of the Day

Is this song a liberal, populist diatribe against a€oeThe Man,a€A or a conservative call for smaller government and more God in schools? The truth, as is so often the case, lies somewhere in between.
