Monetizing Local News

With over half of American getting their news from a mobile device, local news hasn’t quite caught up with the fever…

Pew’s phone survey of 2,251 Americans found that 42 percent report using a cell phone or tablet to check the local weather, while 37 percent use their mobile devices to get information about restaurants and other local businesses. (Source)

Ad Hoc Networks

What happens when your communication network goes into oblivion. Yes oblivion. You’ll need to communicate somehow, right?

"Everything was knocked out," she says. "You had everybody with their devices, but they couldn’t use them. These devices are capable of communicating with other nearby devices, so they’re capable of conveying information across an entire ad hoc network. But there was no ad hoc network set up. There was no software to do that." The "killer app" that would persuade people to open up their phones to direct transmissions from their neighbors may not have emerged yet. But the enthusiasm greeting Apple’s announcement that future versions of the iPhone might be able to serve as wireless base stations suggests that the idea could have market potential. (Source)

The First Dual-Core Smartphone

In many ways, the smartphone platform has evolved following the same kinds of steps we saw in the early days of the PC - lots of different software and hardware platforms, rapidly changing lead players, faster and faster platform update cadence, the slow emergence of obvious majority leaders. Anand and I have talked extensively about just how striking the similarities are between the PC evolution and the current mobile one, but one of the striking differences is just how much faster that evolution is happening in the mobile space. The reason is simple - nearly all the hard lessons have already been learned in the previous PC evolution, it’s just a matter of porting that knowledge to mobile under a different set of constraints.

2011 is going to be a year dominated by multi-core smartphone launches, but there always has to be a first. So just like that, we have our first example of said category of smartphone, the LG Optimus 2X, with Nvidia’s dual-core 1 GHz Tegra 2 AP20H at its heart. The Optimus 2X (simply the 2X henceforth) hasn’t changed much since weAsaw it at CES - the hardware is aesthetically the same, and software at first glance is the same as well. We weren’t able to publish benchmarks at that time purely because LG hadn’t finalized the software build on that test hardware, but we definitely can do so now.

DIY : Homebrew Microtouch

Sure, the latest "iTouchy" gadgets are pretty cool. But who wants a locked down device?AWhy not build your own touch-screen device, with your own apps, all on open source hardware and using open source tools? OK, it can’t play MP3s, but it does have a 320×240 TFT color display with resistive touch screen, an Atmega32u4 8-bit microcontroller, lithium polymer battery charger, backlight control, micro-SD slot, and a triple-axis accelerometer. Yeah, this is the next big thing and for those of us who like to DIY, you can do a lot of cool stuff with this dev board.

This product is just the Microtouch dev board (preloaded with some demo Apps), and does not include a lithium polymer battery or a microSD card. You will need a lipoly battery with 2-pin JST connector for best performance. It can run straight from USB but due to the charger design, the backlight will be dimmed so it will not appear as bright as with a battery installed.AWe strongly suggest our medium lipoly but you can substitute another 3.7V cell.AA microSD card will be handy if you want to display images, slideshows or animations.

How the iPhone Increases the Trade Deficit

Attention iPhone users who think their beloved device is only for video chatting,AAngry Birds, and the occasional phone call: it’s also capable of influencing U.S.-China trade relations.

That’s the conclusionAdrawn by two researchers at the Tokyo-based Asian Development Bank Institute, who estimate that Apple’s iPhone 3G added $1.9 billion to America’s trade deficit with China last year.

Why? Apple, which is based in the U.S., designs and owns the iPhone and largely manufactures its parts in a host of Asian and European countries. But traditional trade flow accounting recognizes the iPhone as a Chinese export because China assembles the parts and ships the finished product. China, in other words, receives full credit for an iPhone’s $179 wholesale price even though the assembly and shipping it provides represent a small fraction of the product’s total manufacturing cost.

Chinese Phone Booths Now Hotspots

It said China is going to change its public telephone booths into Wi-Fi hotspots.

If that is the case, it will be great. AFirstly, ever since mobile phones became popular, the use of Apublic telephone booths is getting less and less. AThe article said in some area of Guangdong, a telephone booth gets less than one person to use it in a day. AThat is really a waste of resource, considering it has to be maintained regularly.

Secondarily, Chinese 3G services (no matter provided by China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom) are still slow and patchy. AWith Wi-Fi hotspots to complement them, the user experience can be much better. A(I am personally on China Unicom's 3G services for my mobile phone, and I am not very happy about it.) ATelephone booths, which are dotted in every corners of the streets, seems the perfect places for Wi-Fi hotspots. AAt least for the cities.

The article mentioned, besides of telephone booths, the telecom operators are also trying to setup hotspots in restaurants, hotels, sport facilities, and so on. A AIf the idea is really implemented, they will turn every city in China into a giant Wi-Fi network for fast internet connection.
