Japanese Whale Boat Sinks Ship

from slatest.slate.com :

Conservationists say a Japenese whaling boat intentionally sunk one of their ships during a "skirmish" in the Southern Ocean Wednesday. The Ady Gil, a boat that bears an uncanny resemblance to a stealth bomber, sank after a collision with a boat that provides security to Japanese whalers. The Japanese Fisheries Agency says the Ady Gil caused the crash; the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which operated the Ady Gil, says the Japanese rammed their boat, which has a history of harassing whalers with lasers, radar, and other space-age annoyances. The six crew members aboard the Ady Gil were rescued by a nearby Sea Shepherd vessel, and they vowed not to be intimidated by the incident. "If they think that our remaining two ships will retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the face of their extremism, they will be mistaken," a Sea Shepherd captain said. "We now have a real whale war on our hands."

Greenpeace activists scale Opera House

operahousesail

Greenpeace activists have unfurled a protest banner from the Sydney Opera House calling for action by world leaders at the Copenhagen climate summit.
Police were called to the Sydney Opera House at 8.15am (AEDT) on Tuesday, following reports that five people had climbed a sail of the building.
Five Greenpeace activists successfully unfurled the 100 square metre banner, which read "Stop The Politics, Climate Treaty Now", from the top of the eastern sail of the Opera House at 9.20am.
The banner, which was taken down shortly afterwards, is calling for world leaders to deliver a legally binding climate treaty at the climate summit in Copenhagen.
Greenpeace chief executive Linda Selvey said the activists, two men and three women, were highly trained and had practised the stunt beforehand.
She said one Greenpeace activist had been arrested, but police could not confirm the arrest.
"The most important thing, from our perspective, is that we get the message across, rather than the fact that some activists get arrested because it’s such a critical time in the process at Copenhagen," Ms Selvey said.
"Basically, (Prime Minister) Kevin Rudd and other world leaders seem to be focusing more on politics than they are on getting the outcome which is what we need for the planet.
"The fossil fuel industry is very cashed up and has been spending a lot of money to get the ear of politicians. We feel it’s very important to use whatever tactics we can to get our message across on behalf of Australians."

Art Battles

IMG_7728-560x373

Art battles are relatively new (circa 2001), but are gaining ground, especially in NYC. Taking form similar to the dj and mc battles of hip-hop, what a great way to create new art! At the above featured battle, the winner took home the loser’s creation. A cool concept that rewards healthy competition.

Japan’s Illegal Legal Prostitution

I will be the first to admit that I spent a little too much time on Matador last week, reading all types of irrelevant BS.AA But, think, my ninjas:AA If I did not do this, you would never know about how freaky the Japanese red light district is - in all its themed sexual glory.AA The picture above is apparently depicting stewardesses from the "flight-themed" club.AA I encourage you to follow the link.

Prostitution is illegal in Japan, which may be one of the reasons for so many creative a€oealternatives.a€A Whatever the reasons, the commercial sex industry in Japan is bold, ubiquitous, and incredibly diverse - a magical hall of mirrors for the die-hard pervert.

Consider this: Japana€™s largest red-light district, Kabukicho, is a convenient two minute walk from Shinjuku, the largest train station in the world, teeming with over 3.64 million daily commuters.

Here is a short list of a few of the more interesting club themes and services available to the paying public. [Link below]

I’m going to go ahead and tell you that this article is well worth it.AA Service offerings include, but are not limited to:

  • "Image" Clubs
  • "Doll" Clubs
  • "Touch" Pubs
  • "Soaplands"
  • and… the ever elusive "Panty Service"

Senator to AIG Execs : Think Suicide

grassley-samurai.png

Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley has suggested that AIG executives should do the only honorable thing - commit ritual suicide, samurai-style.

"I suggest, you know, obviously, maybe they ought to be removed," Grassley said. "But I would suggest the first thing that would make me feel a little bit better toward them if they’d follow the Japanese example and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say, I’m sorry, and then either do one of two things: resign or go commit suicide.

"And in the case of the Japanese, they usually commit suicide before they make any apology."

My ninjas, PLEASE. That’s just too too serious…

Say Please, Please

3213686514_b12ede7b32.jpg

A Canadian who demanded courtesy from a U.S. border security guard says he was pepper sprayed and held in custody for three hours for asking the disrespectful officer to a€oesay pleasea€A when ordering him to turn his car off during a search.

a€oeI refused to turn off the car until he said please. He didna€™t. And he has the gun, I guess, so he sprayed me,a€A said Desiderio Fortunato, a Coquitlam, B.C., resident who frequently crosses the border to visit his second home in the state of Washington. a€oeIs that illegal in the United States, asking an officer to be polite?a€A

The incident occurred on Monday at the Aldergrove border crossing, east of Vancouver, shortly after 12 p.m. Mr. Fortunato, a dance studio director, was travelling to his home in Blaine, Wash., to retrieve a wallet his wife had left during their most recent visit.

He said he was questioned by a border officer who demanded he turn off his car and, when asked to make the request more politely, threatened to spray him with his pepper gun if he did not comply.

a€oeI just felt I should stand my ground about it. I should not be treated like that. No matter what kind of position you are in, if you want respect you have to show respect,a€A he said yesterday. a€oeI asked him three times and when I didna€™t turn the car off, because he didna€™t say please, he pepper sprayed mea€¦. It was terrible. For half an hour or so I couldna€™t see anything.a€A

Crowd Surfing in China

509043707_c4a2533df3_o.jpg

Two years ago, Chinese President Hu Jintao called on Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members to a€oeassert supremacy over online public opinion, raise the level and study the art of online guidance and actively use new technologies to increase the strength of positive propaganda.a€A

After Hu’s speech, Communist Party officials and the State Council issued an official call for a€oecomrades of good ideological and political character, high capability and familiarity with the Internet to form teams of Web commentators … who can employ methods and language Web users can accept to actively guide online public opinion.a€A

The CCP has hired thousands of freelance Internet propagandists whose job is to infiltrate chat rooms, message boards and comment areas on the Internet posing as ordinary users to voice support for the agenda and interest of the CCP. They praise Chinaa€™s one-party system and condemn anyone who criticizes Chinaa€™s policy on Tibet. They comment aggressively on news reports about Chinaa€™s food-safety problems, relations with Taiwan, suppression of bird-flu and AIDS information, Internet censorship, jailing of dissidents, support of Sudana€™s military in Darfur and other sensitive topics. Comments applaud the Chinese government and slam its critics, all using scripts and lines approved by the party.

The BBC calls these freelance propagandists China’s 50 Cent Party. The Guardian newspaper calls it the 50 Cent Army. (50 Cent isna€™t a rapper in this case, but a reference to the pay: 50 Chinese "cents" per post, which is equivalent to about 7 US cents). Other names include a€oered vestsa€A and the a€oered vanguard.a€A

Some estimates claim that the 50 Cent Army includes a whopping 300,000 people. If thata€™s accurate, China’s freelance propagandists exceed in number the total populations of 47 countries.
