Debate Discussion 2/26

Not as much blood splattering as one would have expected last night. Both candidates remained cool, calm and collected. And they were both very much on top of their game.

Is it just me or were these “mediators” very antagonizing? Russert was asking stupid questions and the candidates handled him well. He tried to draw parralels to the life and times of Farrakhan to Obama, trying to bring about some guilt by association. He also tried to put over crazy hypotheticals and expected the candidates to have policy issues for rediculous situations (such as re-invading Iraq, or Iraq telling us to immediatly withdraw from their country). He’s a moron.

Thanks, TPM

Hillary was stupid for complaining about receiving the first quesetion all the time and referencing an SNL skit. I don’t know what she was trying to do, but she got booed. It was also poor decision making to try and say “Well I think we need to be stronger and say reject and not denounce,” in referencing Barack’s position on Farrakhan. And Barack said, “Sorry, waht’s the difference? Okay, I denounce and reject Farrakhan.”

My favorite moment of the debate was after the clip of Clinton making fun of Obama for being a dreamer and creating a painting of a world uniting and problems being solved (“and the clouds will open up and the sun will shine” … etc etc.), the clip ended Obama said “Sounds good” then credited her with a great performance and solid delivery.

To end the night it was Obama to start in with the feel-good moment which I thought was a great way of saying, it’s been good Hillary, it’s been real … but it hasn’t been real good, but now I have to go win the general election.

Too Late To Kill Bill?

big_butt_chair.jpg

After the symbolic hand-job following the mid-February debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton immediately took off the Playtex gloves and unleashed a barrage of penis-shriveling criticism ahead of the Texas and Ohio March 4th primaries. First denouncing an anti-Clinton flier by Obama’s organization regarding the Nafta trade treaty, Hillary paused only long enough to hear the Ghost of Ross Perot’s Failed Campaign warning her, “That sucking sound you hear is the sound of your campaign losing any appeal to the Independent voter”. While some still dispute the wisdom of Nafta, it’s not that easy to unhitch your “experience wagon” from one of the more unpopular legacies of the Bill Clinton White House. Throwing caution to the wind, Senator Clinton raised her fist and brought it down soundly on what she considers Obama’s most vulnerable area: his lack of experience.

Comparing his lack of foreign policy experience to that of George W Bush, she deftly avoided sounding hypocritical by NOT bringing up her husband’s “vast experience” when compared to former CIA Director and two term vice-President George H.W. Bush in his re-election bid. One would think she’d have learned from people’s reaction to her “change you can Xerox” comment, but apparently she rides to these rallies in the little bus with all the other “special needs” candidates, like Nader, who really just don’t get it.

“We’ve seen the tragic result of having a president who had neither the experience nor the wisdom to manage our foreign policy and safeguard our national security,” Mrs. Clinton said in a speech on foreign policy at George Washington University. Uh, yeah, we all watched you and all those other Democrats cower in the corner and give license to George Bush to have his way in Iraq. Just like a drunk throwing up on the sofa and trying to hide it under someone else’s hat, this ploy fools no one.

In an interview on Larry King Live in April of 2004, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said she is not sorry she voted for a resolution authorizing President Bush to take military action in Iraq. Hugely disappointing to antiwar liberals who were being bullied into silence by the increasingly vocal and overtly belligerent pro-war conservative base, Hillary Clinton voted in favor of the Iraq war resolution in October of 2002. In doing so, she followed a long Clinton tradition of courting then abandoning assorted supporters and their causes: gays, blacks, liberals and finally the antiwar movement.

“Obviously, I’ve thought about that a lot in the months since,” she said. “No, I don’t regret giving the president authority because at the time it was in the context of weapons of mass destruction, grave threats to the United States, and clearly, Saddam Hussein had been a real problem for the international community for more than a decade.” And there’s that foreign policy experience we hear so much about.

The attack that’s gotten the most attention in recent days has been a photograph of Mr. Obama in a ceremonial African garb, reputed to have been provided by a Clinton staffer. The source has not been absolutely verified, but it’s doubtful that Senator McCain, himself smeared by rumors of fathering a black child back in 2000, is responsible for something as sophomoric as that. This has all the earmarks of the Clinton campaign, which frankly as been following misstep with misstep for months now. From allowing Bill to even speak, to personal attacks on Obama supporters as naive, this candidacy has managed to insult and alienate pretty much everyone who’s not branded on the ass with a scarlet “C”. Once arrogantly portrayed as “America’s first black president,” Bill came off as more of a snotty, ill-tempered redneck just before the South Carolina caucus. Meanwhile, Senator Clinton cannot decide whether to portray the Damsel in Distress or Harpy from Hell.

Throughout most of these attacks, Obama has wisely decided to defend the issue but not fight fire with fire…which makes this yet another Clinton backfire. The “personal” nature of these attacks on experience and pragmatism are designed to solicit a reply in kind from the Obama campaign, reducing his charismatic appeal once he starts slinging insults. It’s a desperation tactic. Once dragged down into the mud, no one will remember who threw the first punch come convention time as the two-headed monster of Hill and Bill smothers any spark of optimism from the Obama campaign. As long as Obama can maintain his Zen-like composure, Hillary Clinton’s nasty alley-fight will not prevail. And come March 4th, Zen-master Obama might finally be able to reveal to Hillary the sound of one-hand clapping….by slapping her soundly across the head and completely out of the race. Yesterday’s gone, baby! Why don’t you join it?

Debate Tonight

obama-clinton.jpg

Just so you ninjas know. There will be another debate tonight between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. It will go from 9 – 10:30 and will air on NBC. Be sure to check back here for a run-down of the important aspects of what should be a bare-knuckle assault on Obama from Clinton.

The impending doomsday for team Hillary is one week from today when Texas and Ohio will have their primary elections.

I love that picture.

Hillary Blasts Obama

Shame on you!

Sorry Hillary, but angry or not – and ‘in the right’ or not – you need to not be on camera looking all angry like that. AND you sound like an old lady…

Senator Clinton’s latest attempt to derail Barack Obama comes after his camp released ‘campaign literature’ that Clinton claims is spreading lies about her positions on healthcare and NAFTA. Namely that she thought NAFTA was a good idea/success, and that her healthcare plan will require you to pay for coverage [statements which both appear to be true].
Clinton is using this as an attempt to fuel her campaign going in to another debate against Obama – coming up in Ohio in March – saying she wants to meet in Ohio ‘to have a debate about [Barack's] tactics and [his] behavior in this campaign’. Funny, I thought debates were supposed to be about policies, plans for the country, international relations, all that ‘leader of the free world’ junk…

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said his campaign looked forward “to having a debate this Tuesday on the facts, and the facts are that Sen. Clinton was a supporter of NAFTA and the China permanent trade treaties until this campaign began. ”

“And she herself has said that under the Clinton health care plan, she would consider ‘going after the wages‘ of Americans who don’t purchase health insurance, whether they can afford it or not,” he added[via CNN].

And then Barack responded:

Seems a lot like Hillary has realized that in a race that basically comes down to ‘who does the American public LIKE better’ [since their political stances are so similar], she’s losing the popularity contest. Funny thing about that – this is where Obama’s promise of ‘change’ holds true, as he doesn’t reduce his campaign to political mudslinging and name calling. I mean, c’mon Hil – you’re really comparing him to Karl Rove because his campaign released a flier that describes your healthcare plan the same way that you do? And reports your stance on NAFTA? You’re giving him too much credit – and forgetting your own positions.

The Debate Discussion

t1homeapplausegi.jpg

So the debate tonight between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama was interesting. It’s hard for me to say who won. They both performed well. I think it was crucial for Hillary to at least keep up with Obama. Of course, she succeeded at this because she’s stronger in debates than at giving speeches. She had some very positive moments, or at least moments the public wanted to see tonight. I thought she was trying to cry when she started talking about seeing those soldiers walk out to her with their injuries. It seemed a little forced. When confronted with having to stir up the thought of a struggle she immediately referenced to her public humiliation 8 years ago courtesy of her husband, President Bill Clinton. At least she acknowledged that others have gone through worse, she said these are a the people that make her get out of bed everyday. I was reminded of an SNL skit of Hartman as Clinton in a McDonald’s. After having taken a boys French-fries, Clinton says to his father “We’re gonna wake up everyday thinking about you.”

It wasn’t however the only reference to times before Bush. Clinton tried to remind us of how good we had it before GDubz. She assured us that she could get us back on the track we were on before he took over. She wanted us to know that the policies of Bill would carry over into Hillary. Unfortunately, we don’t have the same ingredients for that recipe this time around.

Then there was Barack Obama. He did a fantastic job of keeping up with her considering she needed to really shine tonight. Is it me, or did he sound like he’s had the flu? His single greatest moment was in rebuttal to Hillary’s shrug-off of the question of super-delegates and pledged delegates. Hillary said that she didn’t think it would come to her going after super delegates and possibly upsetting the popular vote over THEIR choice for a nominee. Obama made the argument that the supes ought to strongly consider voting along with he people based on the point that the popular vote being over-turned again would be very disheartening for a population has only increasingly felt alienated from the behaviors of the government. I agree that such a situation would be a call on people to ensure their government is listening. His reference to “silly season” was my favorite part of the night. After being attacked for taking a line from Mass. Governor Duval Patrick (we’re neighbors, no joke) Obama warns of the dangers of negative energies of this kind. His demeanor was good tonight, and I appreciate his tone. I think Obama takes more time to articulate the response he’s looking for in these debates, but I think he goes a lot deeper than she does.

Obama x10

obama.jpg

Just in case you ig’nant and haven’t heard the latest news on the election front I thought I’d help a ninja out with a recap of recent events. Last night Obama won his 9th and 10th consecutive contests, winning a primary in Wisconsin and a caucus in Hawaii. In Wisconsin Barack won big, with 58% of the vote compared to Hillary’s 41%. A margin of 17%! Just for a bit of perspective of what a trouncing that is: the only thing Republican front runner John McCain can do to foul his nomination is quit and he only beat Mike Huckabee by 18%. In Hawaii the results were far more ludicrous with Obama taking 76% of the vote to Hillary’s 24%. These victories ensure that Hillary will go the entire month of February without a victory. That is a long ass time in this kind of atmosphere, ninjas.

Obama now leads in total delegates with 1,319 to Hillary’s 1,245. His camp claims that she will have to win every race from here on out by more than 20 points to recover. Do Hillary’s supporters really think that after he beats her, any heat coming from the Republicans will be worse? I mean she’s hitting him with everything she’s got and she can’t even make a dent in his momentum. I think if he beats her it proves the ‘Republican attack machine’ can’t stop him either.

The hits just keep on coming for Hillary, who plans to attack Obama on not being ready for the Oval Office. Sister, who is?

Ouch!

And her career there shows what a trail blazer she could have been for feminism. A skilled, cautious, pragmatic and constituent-focused legislator, she began to build a Senate career admired by many. But it became clear pretty soon that the Senate was indeed merely a stepping stone back to the White House.

-Andrew Sullivan, the Daily Dish

What a great opinion piece on Hillary.

first_lady_hilary_clinton_wincing_in_199_1.jpg

You ninjas are constantly fooled by trickery and hood-winkery from the liberal media that plagues our country. What you need is a reasonable conservative voice who can show you what America is really all about. I propose you read this man’s blog. He’s an HIV positive, gay Brit; he is Andrew Sullivan.
[Disclaimer: Do not prescribe to Andrew Sullivan's words because of the above. Sure, he's really intelligent, and I bet he's a great guy (in that British sort of way), but his opinions are just insightful, and we offer this because we're just trying to help you develop some of your own.]

Giuliani and Edwards Are Drop-Outs!

giuliani-edwards-28661.jpg

Today we are expected to hear that both Rudy Giuliani and Sen. John Edwards will be dropping out of the race for Presidential nomination. This is rather big news because it means that both the Republicans and the Democrats have a two-person race. In the Donkey’s ring it will be Sen. Barack Obama vs. Sen Hillary Rodham Clinton. These two candidates will now scramble to pick up all the Edwards supporters (I am guessing that the majority of them will go to Barack, and I am assuming that Edwards himself will endorse Obama soon. Just a guess…) On the Elephant side of things Rudy Giuliani is expected to endorse John McCain. I don’t know how his fear mongering managed to gain so much support anyway, and his supporters will probably just follow suit and jump on the McCain wagon. And though Mike Huckabee has not dropped out of the race, I find it hard to imagine a surge of support for him. It looks like he will be a distant third after Super-Tuesday, but he might wait to see anyway.

David Broder is the man.

David Broder

Note: from now on I am going to try and post after every David Broder opinion column from the Washington Post. You should all read it anyways because the man is good.

Case and point: Today’s article (12/5) highlights the most important events of the international community according to how they might affect the U.S. Broder tells us that things are different than they were two weeks ago. Now, his near perky article must have been a result from this weeks BIG STORY: the NIE report on Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Anywho, he got me thinking about how much I want a Democrat in the White House, AND a Democrat controlled Congress. This would be the ill na na, ninjas. Actually … f*ck that, I just don’t want Giulliani or Romney-Bushified chuckle heads. If the Reps cared about themselves they would rally around McCain with Huckabee as the VP. Huckabee is ill because he’s the Republican I could see stabbing the neo-cons right in the heart and letting the blood drip all over him. Interesting guy.

The point is, ninjas, change is on the horizon. If you live in a swing-State, I plead with you: don’t vote for an asshole. Take the time to listen to how these candidates talk, what they talk about, their demeanor, their grace or lack their off … In all sincerity, I think Hillary Clinton should get the nod.

Ninjas, the war on terror needs to end. Because it’s not really a war on terror, this government seems to be all too pleased to feed this fire.

The Straight Talk Express in All Its Glory

The newest bit of controversy on the campaign trail has been provided by the McCain campaign (really, he’s still running, don’t let the 3rd or 4th-place standing fool you). Let’s go to the clip:

Note that the reaction of this noble, upstanding war veteran is not to admonish his supporter for insulting one of his fellow Senators, but rather to laugh and then discuss his numbers against Hillary Clinton (with a nice little reference to the “Democrat” party thrown in, which I won’t go into here, but may later). Consider this for a moment.

There are two potential ways I could address this. One would be to simply decry the overall descent of political discourse into name-calling and mudslinging. That seems too easy, though, and it’s not like today’s campaigns are any worse than the campaigns of the early Republic. Indeed, at least modern campaigns have the theoretical restriction of slander laws.
No, I think I’ll try to imagine a similar incident in which another candidate was insulted in an equivalently crude manner, and what would happen. And I don’t mean something along the lines of asking a Democrat “how do we get this asshole out of office?” in 2004. Asshole isn’t a charged enough word. But say that either Richardson or Obama were the Democratic frontrunner, and a voter asked McCain or Romney “How do we beat the (insert ethnic slur here),” followed by said candidate giggling and calling it “an excellent question.” One imagines the fallout would be rather substantial, even campaign-crippling. Remember this guy?

Yet weirdly, not only has McCain’s campaign not suffered in the polls (though it’s early, we’ll see what happens), they’re using the incident as a fundraising tool. You read that right. They’ve decided that CNN’s coverage shows their inherent pro-Hillary bias. After all, why run that clip unless they’re afraid that McCain would beat Clinton? As such, you should give lots of money to the McCain campaign, so that he can win the Republican nomination and put that uppity Democratic bitch in her place.

A few weeks ago I posted about the recent history of subtle Republican appeals to racial hatred. So it’s not exactly surprising to me when they go for this sort of lowest-common-denominator tactic. It is striking, though, how blatant they’re being about this one, and how easily they’re getting away with it. Surrogates of the Clinton campaign may well have been overstating a bit when they implied that the other Democratic candidates were ganging up on her at the debate because she was the only woman on stage, but the underlying point was no less true. Nowhere have I yet read any prominent reporter or columnist calling McCain for being sexist, only “too candid.” How much of this is due to underlying misogyny, as opposed to the media’s bizarre crush on McCain or their astonishing inability to ever call Republicans on their bullshit is hard to say. Most likely it’s a bit of each.
For a nice way to finish this off, let’s turn it over to CNN. I’d give you a bit of a preview, but I really can’t do justice to how gawdawful this is.

There you have it, folks. For a man running for President to tell one of his supporters to refer to a fellow Senator with respect is not a sign of character, it would be “buckling,” and “would look ridiculous.” It’s going to be a very long election year.
