You Think You’ve Got Problems

story.jpg

John McCain is having a bad week and half. First the Iseman flair up, then people started looking at the more substantive issue of that article: the anti-lobbyist being surrounded by lobbyists (including his campaign manager doing his lobbying business from his tour bus). There was also an major concerning McCain and his campaign financing. That’s right, John McCain, of the McCain-Feingold act that tries to limit campaign spending, is caught in a situation that he does not want to be in.

For the whole scoop check out this article and this one and this one. The long and short of it is that last year McCain opted into a public financing program that loaned him $5.8 million when he was short on cash for his campaign. As a result, there was a cap on the total amount of money McCain was allowed to spend this season, $54 million. Apparently McCain is rapidly approaching that number and wants to opt out of the contract he entered into. The Federal Election Commission, however, does not think it should be that easy. It is said that he cannot opt out of the contract without the FEC’s approval. The FEC cannot even let him out if they wanted to because they need four commisioners. They only have two right now, and the process to appoint more is backed up in Congress.

There are a million more details to this very confusing, complicated and intricate story. The articles linked above will provide more details. I just think it’s convenient, now that he’s the Republican presidential nominee, Mr. Campign-Finance-Reform is looking at 5 years in the slammer (which would obviously never happen) for getting himself in this situation. It’s also another great indicator of McCain’s brilliance as a manager, and he could potentialy be the “leader of the free world.”

Reagan Movie Announced

040610_reagan_gorbachev.jpg

As I mentioned the other day, Ronald Reagan is largely attributed for being the founder of the American neo-conservative movement as we know it today. He is also widely regarded among American Conservatives as the President who ended the Cold War through his negotiations Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev (obviously it was larger than him). Sir Ridley Scott has announced that he intends to make a movie focusing on the relationship of these men at an arms control summit in 1986 in Reykjavic, Iceland.

Obama a la Kennedy

Neither John F. Kennedy nor his brother Robert were idealists. They were realists who understood the importance of idealism in the service of realism. They grasped the central political fact that little can be achieved in Washington unless or until the public is energized and mobilized to push for it; the status quo is simply too powerful.

Great article. Thanks, Andrew. Hope you had a good vacation.

Fear-Mongering

Earlier today I posted about a great Op-Ed piece in the Post this morning about the fact that the PAA has expired. Well, this group, “Defense of Democracies” has taken it upon themselves to spread the message that we’d just better reconsider!

Great article here about just who these people are.

Congress on Surveillance

big_brother_watching_you2.jpg

Great Washington Post op-ed piece today from Sens. Rockefeller and Leahy and Reps. Reyes and Conyers. In it they are calling out the President on fear-mongering and blaming the Democrats for our vulnerability to terrorist attacks. There is no need for that sickening rhetoric here, say these leaders of the Intellegnece and Judiciary committees of both the House and Senate (yeah, they’re ballers). According to them, America is perfectly well protected by the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, despite criticisms of it being out-dated.

The chairs write:

It is clear that he and his Republican allies, desperate to distract attention from the economy and other policy failures, are trying to use this issue to scare the American people into believing that congressional Democrats have left America vulnerable to terrorist attack.

But if our nation were to suddenly become vulnerable, it would not be because we don’t have sufficient domestic surveillance powers. It would be because the Bush administration has done too little to defeat al-Qaeda, which has reconstituted itself in Pakistan and gained strength throughout the world. Many of our intelligence assets are being used to fight in Iraq instead of taking on Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda organization that attacked us on Sept. 11 and that wants to attack us again.

Zing. Give the whole article a read. It provides a graet inside perspective for the rationale of the behavior around this piece of legislation. Don’t fret, ninjas.

What a Surprise

Old news by now, but just in case you missed it. Raul Castro was unanimously elected as Cuba’s new preisdent yesterday. Raul has been acting as President since Fidel’s intestinal surgery in 2006 sidelined him from official duties. The vote yesterday just made his title official. Many hope that Raul with at least begin to open Cuba up to state-run capitalism (oh-so different from socialism?) and help create a connection with the international community that was not allowed to exist because they didn’t want to deal with Fidel.
