The U.S. Air Force is quietly spending millions of dollars investigating ways to use a radical power source — antimatter, the eerie “mirror” of ordinary matter — in future weapons.  The most powerful potential energy source presently thought to be available to humanity, antimatter is a term normally heard in science-fiction films and TV shows, whose heroes fly “antimatter-powered spaceships” and do battle with “antimatter guns.”

More cataclysmic possible uses include a new generation of super weapons — either pure antimatter bombs or antimatter-triggered nuclear weapons; the former wouldn’t emit radioactive fallout. Another possibility is antimatter- powered “electromagnetic pulse” weapons that could fry an enemy’s electric power grid and communications networks, leaving him literally in the dark and unable to operate his society and armed forces.

Following an initial inquiry from The Chronicle this summer, the Air Force forbade its employees from publicly discussing the antimatter research program. Still, details on the program appear in numerous Air Force documents distributed over the Internet prior to the ban.

  1. they cant make antimatter. i can. i have designed a equation of contrast between mass and energy and i am going to make antimatter and make car engines with it.

  2. with the kind of power that’s produced from antimatter-matter annihilation, the US is investing to kill us all. look at it like this. H2 bomb = 0.7% of potential energy is released and well…. if antihydrogen release 100%… DOES THAT NOT SCREAM SOMETHING?

  3. with my my knowledge, i am suggesting them
    “investigating in antimatter is good
but it is highly riskfull, a small error
will worth entire humen kind “

  4. I also believe that the study of anti matter has its benefits. If we could use this energy to create better space travel or better power sources for our modern day technology, we can create revolutionary machines or devices that we havent even thought of yet.

Like some of you have already commented on,the human creation of anti matter has it’s downfalls. For example creating weapons with unimaginable power and destructive forces. Knowing humans and our history that is most likely what we will it for rather than using it for space travel etc…

  5. Millions of Dollars? So even if they spent 62 million dollars a day its gonna take them 2,739+ years to afford 1 gram of Antimatter. (I also understand over such a significant period of time cost would decrease.)

Now I understand they wouldn’t actually need a gram, but in 1 year they would spend 23 billion dollars for 15 tons of explosive force.

23 billion dollars is a lot of money for 1 (M.O.A.B.)GBU-43/B.

Infact, at that cost the entire yearly budget for the military would only buy them 43 of these anti-matter bombs.

So what I’m trying to say if the US was investing in killing us all.. the US might not be around by the time they can afford it.. btw at the cost per gram we’d have to use the entire military budget 60+ years in a row to afford 1 gram. Which is only some 43 kilotons. So 60 years before they make a bomb that is over 1000 times weaker than the 50 megaton nukes we can make now..

  6. please do’nt use these to make pure energy bombs as were
made of fission and fusion of uranium, thorium and hydrogen
