Well i don’t really myself, then again, I dont really read blogs during the week either. But just in case you decided to tune in on this saturday the 23rd of February, or if you are reading this post retroactively on monday, or even teusday, here are some links.

If you missed the mix when it was a free podcast, Heatwave Collective’s ‘An England Story‘ has been released as a 2xCD/2xLP on SoulJazz Records… I wonder whether the LP release will have split tracks or whether they will be mixed like the original… what good would buying a mixtape be on vinyl? Okay, now that I’ve checked, this release has a lot less tracks than the podcast, so I’m guessing these are split tracks. The original mix compiles UK MC culture from 1984 to 2008, featuring some of the most memorable cuts from Papa Levy’s “My God My King” to Est’elle and Joni Rewind’s “Uptown Top Rankin”. Anyway, if you have a little bit of extra dough laying around then pick up this one up…

Next up, I still dont know whether I like this one, or whether I am just so bored that anything seems entertaining to me. Hbo’s newest series is a show called In Treatment, and theyre giving away the first 15 episodes for free, so just follow the link to the podcast on the website and you can watch them all. Its all about a therapist, which doesnt really seem like it would be interesting, but after a few episodes it becomes strangely addictive. You get to watch a week’s worth of sessions with different patients, all of whom are equally nutzo, and then you get to see how nutzo the therapist himself is at the end of the week. Like I said, I still havent really made up my mind on this one, but its free, so go check it out and tell me what you think.

In the news… Roger Steffens breaks down how to win the Reggae Grammy, and why it isnt him that chooses the winner. I know you’ve heard of the hip hop cops, but did you know about the dancehall police? I just feel bad for the crossover artists that have to deal with both. And finally, Erik Arnold on KMEL and the decline of Hyphy.
Thats all for now, enjoy the weekend…

  1. yeah, the soul jazz release is all split tracks, which is kind of nice — it doesn’t compete with the podcast, it complements it. and it allows DJs to recontextualize as they may. props to heatwave and soul jazz both for this –

  3. i’m really pleased that this has come out, is it available in twelve inch biscuit format i wonder, england story is probably the best reggae mixup i ever heard, it’s between that and shortkut’s “beat junkie” cd, not as hilarious as madlib’s “bomb shelter” mix, i heard a rumour that there was a part two of the podcast being thought about…

  4. ive never heard the shortkut mix, will have to check for that… madlib’s bomb shelter mix is a funny one, though not really the best selections one there in my opinion (he was restricted to the trojan catalog after all)… part two of the podcast would be an answer to my prayers, i hope that rumor has some substance to it!
