your good thing (is about to end)

rawls.jpg

This record is a little bit damaged so the recording doesn’t sound so great, but its a fantastic tune featuring Lou Rawls at his best working with producer/composer/arranger extraordinaire David Axelrod.  The song was originally penned by Isaac Hayes and David Porter and recorded by Mable John on a Stax 45 in 1966, but this version finds the late, great Rawls in a fine style singing sardonically over the drawn out instrumental arrangement.

Marie Queenie Lyons – Soul Fever

lyons_marie_soulfever_102b.jpg

Soul Fever is a recording from the mysterious Marie “Queenie” Lyons reissued by the ever impressive Madrid-based Vampisoul imprint.  Originally put out on the DeLuxe label, this album is the only full length by the relentlessly funky Louisiana native who apparently disappeared shortly after its 1970 release.  Working with the likes of James Brown, King Curtis, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis, Lyons clearly learned from among the brightest talents of her era, and it shows undeniably on this record.  With a raw, unadulterated vocal style, she destroys each tune one after another on Soul Fever, leaving you wondering how such a crucial sound could have passed under the radar at the time of it’s release.  Standout tracks for me include the opener “See and Don’t See” and her soulful rendition of “Try Me”, but the entire album is full of  top notch material. Kept alive by crate-diggers and funk enthusiasts, this wicked collection of tunes is finally available on CD and 180 gram Vinyl LP. As always the good folks at Vampisoul have put together an impressive product with minimalist cover illustration and quality packaging, the only thing that I would have wished for is some information about the personnel and the location of the recording. Soul Fever comes highly recommended to anyone in need of some heavy r&b to begin the summer, guaranteed you won’t be able to take this one out of your rotation for a long time.

AKonman?

I know this is old news in the blog circuit but i had to post it because this really makes me laugh. First of all, did anyone really ever believe this dude was a car jacker and whatnot? I mean, listen to him talk, or sing… really tho… The thing that I’m curious about is how will people react to this news? While cultivating an image and marketing it is a pretty important part of gaining the starpower of someone like Akon, I would tend to think a lot of it is that people just like his songs. I mean, the average Akon fan is most likely a fifteen year old girl from New Jersey–or this dude–and in the end, I think they would buy his music whether or not they believed he was a real badman or whatever. Truth be told, his songs are catchy, and I think they will continue to make drunk people want to dance while in the club… so… Does this even matter to his career? And in the end who cares? What do you people think? Do any readers actually rate Akon in the first place?
kon.jpg

Akon’s ad nauseum claims about his criminal career and resulting prison time have been, to an overwhelming extent, exaggerated, embellished, or wholly fabricated, an investigation by The Smoking Gun has revealed. Police, court, and corrections records reveal that the entertainer has created a fictionalized backstory that serves as the narrative anchor for his recorded tales of isolation, violence, woe, and regret. Akon has overdubbed his biography with the kind of grit and menace that he apparently believes music consumers desire from their hip-hop stars.

While the performer’s rap sheet does include a half-dozen arrests, Akon has only been convicted of one felony, for gun possession. That 1998 New Jersey case ended with a guilty plea, for which the singer was sentenced to three years probation. Another 1998 bust, this one in suburban Atlanta, has been seized upon by Akon and transformed into the big case that purportedly sent him to prison (thanks to his snitching cohorts) for three fight-filled years. In reality, Akon was arrested for possession of a single stolen BMW and held in the DeKalb County jail for several months before prosecutors dropped all charges against him.

Jimmy James and the Vagabonds

p13806x0m2d.jpg

British Soul group Jimmy James and the Vagabonds uncovered at Brown Eyed Handsome Man

“The first musical post for this series is not a surprise. Welcome to the High Priest of Soul and the New Religion! This is Jimmy James And The Vagabonds

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Bear in mind that the band formed in Jamaica and that both singers Jimmy James and Count Prince Miller were born in the USA, for they were probably one of the two most important soul groups working in Britain in the mid 1960s. Their work and careers led to Britain and influenced the British music scene and offered new experiences to many people there.

The original Vagabonds formed in Harbour View and played around Kingston, Jamaica. They were at the time the most popular live band in Jamaica behind Byron Lee & the Dragonaires. The band by the early 1960s comprised Count Prince Miller as the second vocalist, guitarists Wallace Wilson, bassist Coleson Chen, keyboardist Carl Noel, saxophonists Milton James and Fred Fredericks, and drummer Rupert Balgobin. Their changing personnel at different times included Jackie Mittoo on organ, Cedric IM Brookes on tenor sax, Calypso Joe, Honest Jon, and Lynn Taitt. Thier live reputation well-established, and with a number of Jamaican hit singles, the Vagabonds were seeking a new lead vocalist to help the band break international markets. Young local Kingstonian Ezeke filled the role for a few months before Count Prince Miller offered the role to Michael James AKA Jimmy James, an American-born singer who’s self-penned songs “Bewildered & Blue” and “Come To Me Softly” had been No.1 hits in Jamaica in 1959 and 1960 for Tip Top Records. The new band plus Jimmy recorded Presenting the Fabulous Vagabonds for Island Records in 1964.”
