I believe the riots in Argentina were not directly about rising food prices, but rather caused by farmers protesting against export taxes on agricultural products. (The increased taxes were, however, imposed by the government due to rising world food prices.) The farmers in general would probably support the use of bio-fuels as this would lead to increased profits. Perhaps the photo is from the 1989 food riots, but those were caused by price rises that resulted from inflation caused by poor fiscal policy.

right you are, matthew, thanks for the clarification. though i do believe the farmers’ strike has led to food shortages/price increases domestically. and i guess the strike has been on ‘hold’ since the beginning of april, but may resume next week if the farmers and gov’t can work out the export taxes http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601086&sid=axhl514hjUwc&refer=latin_america. anyone have more info on this?
