Roll-up Laptop

This prototype, made by Dr Keith Seffen, lecturer in structural engineering at the University of Cambridge, would hold the main electronic components along the wooden strips on the vertical sides of the screen, Seffen envisages.

The screen then rolls up into an easily portable size. Without any hinges or folds the roll-up screen is more robust, said Seffen. So, no need to panic if it’s dropped on the floor.

The material shown here is a copper alloy, with its structure distorted to produce either two shapes: a flat screen or tube structure. Seffen has developed materials that will hold three shapes and said "we think four shapes are a possibility".
