Sundown, USA

An article expounds upon a new book by an author about America’s Sundown Towns, over at the Washington Post (go figure).A It was a good read and comes highly recommended (both book and article, that is.

If Loewen’s first priority is to unveil what he calls the "hidden history" of sundown towns, his second is to debunk the widely held idea that when the issue is race, the South is always "the scene of the crime," as James Baldwin famously wrote. The incidence of sundown communities in the South, Loewen reports, was actually far lower than it was in a Midwestern state such as Illinois, in which roughly 70 percent of towns were sundown towns in 1970. "This does not make whites in the traditional South less racist than [those] in . . . other regions of the country," he suggests. (From the Post)

To quote:

Any corrupt dictator can embezzle $70B over 30 years when the Suez Canal is in [his] backyard. Building/managing a conglomerate is much more admirable. Besides, US intelligence estimates the Mubarak family fortunes are much less than the Bush crime family. But what do I know? I don’t believe in capitalism anyway. - M.G.

My Ninja, Please! 2.21.11: Mexican Drug Catapult

Below is footage of traffickers using what appears to be a medieval trebuchet machine to fling drugs over the border.A My ninja, please!A With all of the technology out there, the Mexican drug ninjas are proving that sometimes an old trick works the best.AA The video doesn’t show much (click through and read the story), but after Obama sent 1200 National guardsmen down to the border to bolster security, this is part of what they discovered.A I’m guessing they were tipped off by the loud "boinnnng."

Mexico City

Men wheeling a giant catapult up to a wall, lobbing heavy objects to the other side, could be a battle scene out of The Lord of the Rings.

The setting is not Middle Earth, but the equally surreal US-Mexico border. Perhaps the only things missing are the Orcs and wizards.

Mexican drug smugglers searching for innovative ways to transport their narcotics were discovered using a 9-foot-tall catapult to launch bundles of marijuana over the border fence and into the United States (see video below).

"It looks like a medieval catapult that was used back in the day," Tucson sector Border Patrol spokesman David Jimarez told Reuters. (Read the Article)

My question is this:A If they’re using catapults and slingshots, and sh!t, what else are they doing?A Like… I’m pretty sure one of those drills that Shredder and the Brain used in TMNT would work pretty well…

Don't get me wrong - I think it's brilliant that software developers are constantly improving their products, tweaking things, adding new functionality, and making things better. No-one can possibly miss the days when updates were few and far between, arrived on a CD-Rom and took an age to install. ABut haven't we gone too far in the other direction? Updates are great, but let's make sure that developers aren't releasing products too early, knowing they can update with every little improvement.

To many believers, the answer to the "Which god?" question seems obvious. It’s their god, of course. Like, duh. But to someone who doesn’t believe — to someone being presented with Pascal’s Wager as a reason to believe — the answer to "Which god?" is anything but obvious. To someone who doesn’t believe, the question is both baffling and crucial.

The well-actually crowd wants as much as everyone else to participate in the conversation. They want to be loved. ABut instead of rolling with the punches and participating in a brainstorm of ideas and exploding humor, they contribute interruptions, facts and details that merely produce stop energy on an ongoing discussion. They turn the center of attention towards them. AThe well-actually crowd means well. They want to be loved, they just have not realized that they are undermining their own quest for friends.
