Our intellectual grasp extends throughout the cosmos, and has brought to light the material processes going on at every scale-from the themonuclear furnaces of the stars, down through the protein-factories of the cytoplasm, to the changes of wave-pattern which take place when an atom swallows a photon. And this intellectual grasp is paralleled and completed when we turn to the practical sphere. We have exceeded the dreams of the craftsmen, the alchemists and the medicine-men, and by now we have the means either to satiate or to destroy ourselves.
The short answer to that last question is: of course not. (A two-hour movie that consisted only of graphically depicted mafia executions would be at once honest, unsentimental, authentic, and unwatchable.) But one doesn’t need to argue that Gomorrah is superior to The Godfather (it isn’t), or that it’s the best mob movie of the decade (it is) to make the case that Garrone’s film boasts a different power than Francis Ford Coppola’s. With The Godfather trilogy, Coppola worked brilliantly off of a pre-existing dramatic blueprint: It was a rise-and-fall gangland epic with roots extending back not just to Howard Hawks’ Scarface and the Edward G. Robinson vehicle Little Caesar, but (as the latter film’s title suggests) to Shakespearean tragedy. Today, that blueprint has been worn bare from excessive handling and, with Gomorrah, Garrone and his screenwriters tore it up.

As scientists get used to the idea that Earth is in a new geological age, that the Holocene a the last geological age a has been replaced by Anthropocene, they're figuring out how it got to be that way.
Two years ago, ecologists Erle Ellis and Navin Ramankutty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, released a map of the world's biological areas, traditionally known as biomes. Similar maps were found on science classroom walls across the land, but theirs was different in one very fundamental way: They updated the definition of biome to reflect how human beings used the land.
Ellis and Ramankutty said this was much more relevant to the 21st century, with more than six billion people using more of Earth's water, energy and matter than any other species, than classical biomes that didn't account for humanity's influence. They called their newly-defined areas "anthromes," short for anthropological biomes. It was a map for theAanthropocene.
During a subsequent presentation, someone asked the researchers for details on how the anthropocene evolved. To answer that question, Ellis and Ramankutty have come out with a new set of maps that show how anthromes have changed since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.
"You now have a biosphere that's completely transformed by people. Biology goes on in the human context, not the natural," he said. "And given the idea that most of ecosystem form and process is created by and ruled by human activity, how did it get to be that way?"

Lampshade designer Sarah Walker makes lampshades out of maps. She's used Ordnance Survey and Bartholomew maps, likes using out-of-date maps "because I prefer the look of the print colours and enjoy the recycling aspect," and even applies strips of paper to cover up map folds.
