Yo-Yo iPod Charger

091908_ioinduction_01.jpg

Always forgetting to charge your iPod/iPhone, leaving you without music and phone service? Can’t get to an outlet? No sun where you live? Well, then there’s still a way for you get a charge: the iYo.

Yes, this is actually a concept for a yo-yo that will power your iGadget, designed by Swedish industrial designer Peter Thuvander. If these things actually get manufactured, they might bring back the yo-yo for reals. I’d buy one…

As you can imagine from its name, the iYo is a yoyo-powered induction charger for your iPhone. This concept was created by Thuvander since Sweden is dark six months out of a year, so solar chargers don’t really work well. The iYo creates a charge by moving up and down on its string, just like a yo-yo. This is the first yo-yo-based charging system that we’ve ever seen.

Reactions From Around the World

HuffPo has an interesting slideshow of Obama election reactions from around the world, including his family in Kenya and the residents of the fishing town of Obama, Japan.

Ninja Homes: Cabin by Lode Architects

lode_architects-cabin-1.jpg

Built on the site of a former 12 x 4.5 meter barn near Honfleur, France, this cabin by Lode Architects gives a feeling of elegant, earthy minimalism. Very much your typical - if not well built - cabin from the exterior, the architect’s intent is truly expressed inside - where the cabin walls are a clean, unfinished plywood and the floors are a contrasting black rubber. All of the cabin’s functions are grouped in the center of the building, with a galley kitchen opening out onto the deck [seen below] - opposite which sits a large tub [also below] within an open space, looking out through a large window onto the landscape.

The two large windows - on either end of the cabin - sit within walls that are painted a matte black, in order to create a stark contrast with the views of the landscape outside.

Additionally, this project is the first [I believe] to utelize Wallpaper* Magazine’s ‘interactive floor plan’ feature - where visitors to the site can click an arrow located within a project’s floor plan to see a photo of the corresponding view, both for the project’s interior + exterior. Great idea.
View the project + its interactive floor plan at Wallpaper*.

"The Box" arrives in Singapore

bbcshippingcontainermnp.jpg

From the Suez Canal to South East Asia, The Box - a BBC-branded container that travels the globe to illustrate how globalisation is affecting us all - has made its way across the Arabian ocean in good time.
It has landed here on the island nation of Singapore aboard the MV Copenhagen Express. This is a routine stop over - hundreds of shipping crates are unloaded while new ones are hoisted in to replace them.

The Box lies deep in the ship’s hull, buried somewhere among 1500 of its metallic comrades. German Chemicals and frozen pork may be among its neighbouring boxes, although the crew cannot be sure.

Security through obscurity is part of how the shipping business works.
