Dinosaur Design vs. Cockroach Design

Dinosaurs used to be kings and queens of the planet. Nothing got in their way except for each other. They came in many shapes and sizes. Some ate plants and others ate meat. They were complex creatures and each of them were unique in their own way.

If you were to look at all of the dinosaurs and were told you could design your own then you would have a ton of cool features to work with. You could get the wings of a pterodactyl, horns of a triceratops, roar of a tyrannosaurus rex and a number of other bits and pieces. You would simply take the best of each species to make one wonderful creature.

Odds are though it wouldn’t work out very well. It would fail just like every other dinosaur. This is how some designers like to design. They look at all the great trends other sites are using and they collect them to try and piece together a perfect design. If someone were to ask you what creature from millions of years ago you would love to replicate today due to its greatness would you even consider the cockroach? The great dinosaurs died off and yet this little, disgusting insect lives on. There is nothing fancy about it and yet it has become the closest thing to timeless we see today.

The Tiger Gap

A shocking news bulletin indicates that smugglers wereAattempting to bring a tiger cub into Iran.A Tigers are of course an endangered species, as rare as uranium, and zoos around the world are racing to enrich their tiger stocks.A While we can't be certain of the identity of the intended recipients in Iran, the Revolutionary Guard is known to be interested in acquiring the most advanced muscle and claw technology.A Indeed, officials in Israel fear that if Iran is not stopped they could soon have a formidable arsenal of large felines.A With this arsenal, no gazelle, goat, or sheep in the region would be safe.A Continued Iranian defiance of international conventions on endangered species would also have grave implications for the endangered Arabian leopard, the few remaining lion prides in India, and the snow leopards of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In order to stave this off, Israeli officials privately confide that they may have no choice but to bomb zoos in Tehran within the next year, unless the US acts quickly.A While such an extreme measure would of course inflame Muslims and zoo enthusiasts around the world, the principles at stake are too important for this defiance to be unopposed.A The Middle East is a dangerous neighborhood, red in tooth and claw, and Netanyahu fears that without action to force the Ayatollahs to change their stripes, Iran will have regional feline supremacy.A At that point, the Gulf states will quickly fall into Tehran's diplomatic and tourist orbit, further undermining US interests in the region.

Soft-headed Intellectuals

Perhaps the most unlikely hero to emerge from this summer's World Cup was Paul the octopus, a lightly spotted invertebrate living in an aquatic center in Germany. Paul earned worldwide fame for successfully "predicting" the winner of eight out of eight soccer games, including the final match. Before each game, Paul's keepers would place two food-filled boxes, each of which was decorated with one team's national flag, in the creature's tank. Whichever box Paul ate from first was considered to be his pick. The octopus nailed it all eight times.

Though Paul's success seems mainly to have been luck a evidence for psychic sports forecasting ability in octopuses is, well, somewhat lacking a if you were looking to consult a brainy animal, you could do worse than an octopus. Research is increasingly revealing that there's something sophisticated going on inside the octopus's soft and squishy head. The critters, it seems, are surprisingly smart.

Octopuses "make decisions all the time, complicated decisions," says Roger Hanlon, a senior scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. "People don't expect that from a creature related to an oyster."

Biodiversity: Invasive Alien Species

It is very difficult to identify 100 invasive species from around the world that really are "worse" than any others. Species and their interactions with ecosystems are very complex. Some species may have invaded only a restricted region, but have a high probability of expanding and causing further great damage (e.g. see Boiga irregularis: the brown tree snake). Other species may already be globally widespread, and causing cumulative but less visible damage. Many biological families or genera contain large numbers of invasive species, often with similar impacts.

Species were selected for the list according to two criteria: their serious impact on biological diversity and/or human activities, and their illustration of important issues surrounding biological invasion. To ensure the inclusion of a wide variety of examples, only one species from each genus was selected. Absence from the list does not imply that a species poses a lesser threat.

Lobsters and Crabs Feel Pain

‘March 27, 2009 — Ripping the legs offAlive crabsand crowding lobsters into seafood market tanks are just two of the many practices that may warrant reassessment, given two new studies that indicate crustaceans feel pain and stress.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence that virtually all animals, including fish, shellfish and insects, can suffer.

Robert Elwood, the lead author of both papers, explained to Discovery News that pain allows an individual to be "aware of the potential tissue damage" while experiencing "a huge negative emotion or motivation that it learns to avoid that situation in the future."

Both pain andAstress are therefore key survival mechanisms.

Elwood, a professor in the School of Biological Sciences at The Queen’s University in Belfast, and colleague Mirjam Appel studiedAhermit crabscollected from rock pools in County Down, Northern Ireland. All of the crabs survived the experiments and were later released back into their native habitat.
