UN launches world’s first tuition-free university
19 May 2009 a€" A leading arm of the United Nations working to spread the benefits of information technology today announced the launch of the first ever tuition-free online university. As part of this yeara€™s focus on education, the UN Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technology and Development (GAID) presented the newly formed University of the People, a non-profit institution offering higher education to the masses.
a€oeThis year the Global Alliance has focused its attention on education [and] how ICT can advance education goals around the world,a€A Serge Kapto from GAID told a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York.
For hundreds of millions of people around the world higher education is no more than a dream, Shai Reshef, the founder of the University of the People, told reporters. They are constrained by finances, the lack of institutions in their region, or they are not able to leave home to study at a university for personal reasons.
Mr. Reshef said that this University opened the gate to these people to continue their studies from home and at minimal cost by using open-source technology, open course materials, e-learning methods and peer-to-peer teaching.

Parrots teach man to speak again | My Ninja Please!!! 3.5.09
Brian Wilson, from Damascus, Maryland, suffered life-threatening injuries in an accident 14 years ago. He also lost his ability to speak.
But he now claims that the chatter of pet parrots confounded the bleak outlook of doctors, who were convinced that he would spend the rest of his life in bed at a nursing home.
a€oeTwo birds taught me to talk again,a€A he said. a€oeI had such a bad head injury I was never supposed to talk any more than a two-year-old.a€A
But two of the birds that he had had as pets since he was a child a€oejust kept talking to me and talking to mea€A.
a€oeThen all of a sudden, a word popped out, then two, then more.a€A
To show his gratitude to the birds who helped him on the path to rehabilitation, Mr Wilson has devoted his life to feathered pets whose owners are no longer able or want to keep them.
He now shares his home with about 80 brightly plumed exotic birds, from snow-white cockatoos to scarlet or blue and green macaws to African grey parrots.
He has set up a foundation called the Wilson Parrot Foundation, which also offers the services of the birds to entertain at birthday parties and corporate events.
a€oeYou wonder why I rescue birds? They helped me to talk again, so now I take care of them,a€A he said.

Gamers can try NYC river ditching
A free computer game has gone online that challenges players to become the next "Hero on the Hudson" by safely landing a virtual passenger jet on the New York City waterway.
The streamed game warns players that both jet engines are disabled, it is impossible to make it to an airport, and they must ditch in the Hudson River in a virtual version of the US Airways miracle landing on January 15.
"The fate of the passengers is in your hands," reads an introductory page of the game available online at www.tastyplay.com.
Players then use left and right arrow keys to keep an animated jet parallel to the surface of the onscreen river as it makes an emergency descent with dark smoke billowing from its engines.
Level landings are rewarded with a banner proclaiming the player a hero as tiny figures representing passengers file onto the wings. Sloppy landings are met with the sight and sound of a sinking jet.
The pilot of the US Airways jet that ditched in icy waters off New York in real life was hailed as a hero for coolly saving 155 passengers and crew.
The former fighter pilot was lauded for smoothly ditching the jet belly-first onto the Hudson River.
The soft landing allowed passengers to safely escape from the stricken craft.

In the studio…
So wea€™ve been in the studio recording our new album. Today is our fourth day here. Wea€™re recording this one at Satellite Park in the Malibu Hills. Geza X and Paul Roessler are engineering it. They are two of the coolest guys. Theya€™re making this whole processs really easy for us. Wea€™re recording and mixing 13 songs in 10 days. Ita€™s going well so far. Wea€™ve pretty much finished the initial drum tracking today. All thata€™s left are bass overdubs and the guest ninjas that are coming in on Saturday.
While wea€™ve been here Ia€™ve also been trying to keep booking our national tour that we are going on in April. Ita€™s tough doing this while Ia€™m trying to record drums and keep my mind in the whole recording process, but I have to keep trying to get us gigs! If I lag on it, wea€™re going to miss booking deadlines, and we cana€™t afford to do that. Ia€™ve used Myspace a lot to find venues and bands in certain cities and I just want to say that there are some amazingly nice bands out there. I put out emails and bulletins and got a lot of replies from bands who are willing to help us out. That is so encouraging. I hope we get to meet and play with these bands on tour.
Ia€™m not sure when this album will come out. We are basically going to be broke after this recording and tour, and wea€™ll still need to master and replicate the CD. So ita€™s going to depend on when we can get the money to put it out. You can help! Notice the DONATE link to the bottom right? Well click on it and donate some money to us! Every little bit counts!
In the meantime, check out some pictures from our sessions. Yeah, wea€™re unmasked, whatever.
Universal Human Rights
So we’re a couple of days off on this - but this month [December 10th to be exact] marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since this is the truth right here - more so than our ‘beloved’ constitution - we really suggest you go read the entire document.
Equality? Freedom from torture? Yeah - this thing is still way ahead of it’s time my people.
