Ramon Sampson: Insane Drumming

January 11th, 2010 - Ramon Sampson Named America’s Best Undiscovered Drummer in World’s Largest Drum Competition

Guitar Center today announced Ramon Sampson as the winner of Guitar Center’s Drum-Off, the search for the nation’s top undiscovered drummer. Performing in front of a capacity crowd this past Friday, January 8th at The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, 19-year-old Ramon Sampson from Cordova, Tennessee beat out four other Drum-Off finalists from all across the country, winning a prize package worth more than $40,000 and earning the title of Guitar Center’s Drum-Off Champion. Ramon was chosen by a panel of judges that featured some of today’s most respected and distinguished drummers including the legendary Peter Erskine (Steely Dan), Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Drew Hester (Foo Fighters / Joe Walsh), Thomas Lang, Jason Sutter (Chris Cornell), Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp / Sessions Legend), John Tempesta (The Cult), Tony Royster Jr. (Jay-Z), Nisan Stewart (Jamie Foxx / 50 Cent) and Ray Luzier (Korn).

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a vital figure of the modern era. His lectures and dialogues stirred the concern and sparked the conscience of a generation. The movements and marches he led brought significant changes in the fabric of American life through his courage and selfless devotion. This devotion gave direction to thirteen years of civil rights activities. His charismatic leadership inspired men and women, young and old, in this nation and around the world.

Dr. King’s concept of "somebodiness," which symbolized the celebration of human worth and the conquest of subjugation, gave black and poor people hope and a sense of dignity. His philosophy of nonviolent direct action, and his strategies for rational and non-destructive social change, galvanized the conscience of this nation and reordered its priorities. His wisdom, his words, his actions, his commitment, and his dream for a new way of life are intertwined with the American experience.

Good Conduct Stripes

In a hope to boost enlisted troops morale, the Air Force has reinstated the Good Conduct Medal. The Air Force is building upon their legacy of being a disciplined, high-tech, comfortable and highly volunteered arm of service, and adding to their already well liked "chest candy" of awards.

The Marines who give out the fewest medals and see the greatest amount of combat, have trouble seeing the benefit of adding another medal to their cache of fatigue add-ons.

Does the honor do more than just separate the well-behaved from the trouble makers or does it motivate personel to be like those stationed beside them?

Two brothers who are so poor they live in a cave on the outskirts of Budapest and get by selling scavenged junk are in line to receive a $6.6 billion inheritance from a long-lost grandmother, the U.K. Daily Telegraph reports.

Zsolt and Geza Peladi have been informed that they are entitled to the fortune, along with a sister who lives in the United States the newspaper reported Wednesday.

Charity workers in Hungary passed on the good news to the brothers after being contacted by lawyers handling the estate of their maternal grandmother, who died recently in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, the Telegraph said.

"We knew our mother came from a wealthy family but she was a difficult person and severed ties with them, and then later abandoned us and we lost touch with her and our father until she eventually died," Geza Peladi, 43, was quoted as saying by ATV television in Hungary.

"If this all works out it will certainly make up for the life we have had until now - all we really had was each other - no women would look at us living in a cave," said Geza Peladi.

"But with money, maybe we can find a partner and finally have a normal life. We don’t know yet if she even told our grandmother about us. I understand it was only while they were carrying out genealogical research that lawyers found we existed."

Under German law, direct descendants are automatically entitled to a share of any estate. As the grandmother’s daughter is dead, the money goes to her grandchildren.

In a move that will sure shock the art world, Shaquille O’Neal is scheduled to curate an exhibit entitled Size DOES Matter for The FLAG Art Foundation. The exhibition will be on view from February 19, 2010 - May 27, 2010 and includes works from international artists exploring the different ways that scale affects the perception of contemporary art. Good luck my ninja, bring down the backboard of some canvases!

"It was a little harder than I thought it would be," O’Neal told Bloomberg. "When you think about what each of the artists put into their work, what they are expressing and want to share with the world, you feel bad about having to narrow it down."
