Building the Future

rooseveltmnp.jpg

Ezra Temko, Delaware’s youngest City Council member, spoke on the "Running for Office" panel Friday afternoon in front of the nation’s future progressive policy-makers at The Roosevelt Institution’s National Student Expo in Washington, DC, on July 11.
The 22-year-old Temko got his start in politics through the Roosevelt Institution, the nation’s first student think tank. Before starting an RI chapter on his campus, Temko hadn’t thought much about local policy; now he helps make it. "I think that Roosevelt is tremendously beneficial in helping you talk about issues and helping you to become vision-oriented to really answer questions," Temko said.

Temko is part of a group of more than 8,000 reform-minded students on seventy-five campuses who have funneled their political vigor into policy papers, lobbying efforts, and pragmatic dialogue with community leaders-activism that eschews bullhorns and raucous marches and instead seeks to work through a system that is often disconnected and at odds with the needs, interests, hopes and dreams of today’s youth.

The Roosevelt Institution’s third annual National Student Expo showcased the organization’s most innovative policy proposals of the year. "For students in college, it’s the make it or break it time for political involvement," said Orriel Richardson, a law student at George Washington University who is starting a Roosevelt Institution chapter on her campus. "You have the kids who protest the war and see that war persists and then they’re disenfranchised from the system, as opposed to a student policy think tank that lets you learn that, yeah, you can protest the war, but it’s one of a bundle of elements that need to be addressed to effect change."

Meet the urban sharecroppers

urbansharecroppersmnp.png

It was a small notice, in between the ads for childminding and English lessons. "Free gardening. I will cultivate an abundant vegetable plot for you in your garden and we will share the produce 50/50." Then a number.

When I got home I looked at my garden - unused, unloved, under wood chip. I looked at Google Earth. Almost half of the 3.1m households in London have a garden. Put together, they would occupy an area roughly the size of the Isle of Wight, and could insulate us against food price hikes and keep us all in fresh vegetables. Most are lawns or crazy paving.

The idea of garden-sharing began in cities, among people who wanted to grow fruit and vegetables to eat but didn’t have the time, space or confidence. The most obvious solution was to pool resources; for knowledgeable people with time on their hands, but little space, to help the time-poor; and for those - often elderly - with large, unmanageable gardens to get labour in exchange for yield.

It started informally with flat dwellers annexing the odd flower bed and gradually it grew. Communal gardens cropped up, gardening groups emerged. Fritz Haeg created an edible estate in the front gardens of a Southwark tower block. Projects such as the Tavistock Garden Share Alliance and pilot schemes such as LandFit and Swapaplot paired up unused gardens with the green-fingered. Suddenly there was a blush of Yahoo message groups, adverts in the local library, communal street sheds and action days. People began to share support and tips at first, then labour, compost, watering duties and harvests. Sales of vegetable seeds overtook those of flowers for the first time since the second world war.

"Ninja Warriors" Arrested In N.J.

pizzaninjamnp.png

Clifton police say they arrested two men dressed liked ninjas and armed with Asian martial arts weapons who said they were sending a warning to drug users.

Calling themselves "Shinobi warriors," the men wore black SWAT-type vests and carried knives, throwing stars, swords, nunchucks and a bow and arrows.

Twenty-year-old Tadeusz Tertkiewicz and 19-year-old Jesse Trojaniak are charged with weapons possession. Tertkiewicz is also charged with harassment for a letter left for an ex-girlfriend.

After being arrested early Wednesday in a car on Route 46, the men said they were delivering warning letters to drug dealers and drug users urging them to stop their "impure" activities.

Their weapons, Detective Capt. Robert Rowan told The Bergen County Record, were to be a precaution in case they were confronted by the drug dealers.
The officers who arrested the men found the letters in five envelopes decorated with red Chinese designs, The Record reports.

Reports show the two men had already delivered one such letter to Tertkiewicza€™ 16-year-old ex-girlfriend in Clifton. Police contacted the teen and her mother and alerted them to the situation.

The letters warned drug users and drug dealers that the a€oeShinobi will stop your cruel and sadistic intentions with justified yet, merciful force.a€A

In the letter, the two men accused drug dealers and users of having a€oecommitted sin of passing impuritya€A to others and that the a€oewind guides us to those of impure heart and intent.a€A

a€oeTheir intentions may have been good, but we tell everyone that they shouldna€™t take the law into their own hands because it will cause more problems for everyone in the longrun,a€A Rowan said.

Trojaniak’s father tells The Associated Press his son is "not a maniac" and was only trying to help a friend.

I, too, would have found them to be pretty ninjarish, what with their bent toward vigilante justice, if not for one glaring inconsistency:AA Ninjas don’t get arrested, my dude.

Velociraptor Awareness Month

757px-velociraptor_dinoguy2.jpg

[Thing doesn’t look so bad really - just a scary-ass looking bird with short wings…]
So, because I spend too much time online I’ve ecently learned that September is National Velociraptor Awareness Month - sponsored by the American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention, along with the North American Velociraptor Defense Association and the United Velociraptor Widows Fund.

WHAT!?!?

Really, you just need to be checking out this hilarious website - and watch out for raptors! [Ed. Note: they don’t look like those things in the Jurassic Park movies, my ninjas].

Velociraptor attack is the 3rd leading cause of death for men age 27-29. However, everyone must think about the implications of velociraptors: young and old, men, women and transgendered persons.

The American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention is a bi-partisan group of professionals, dedicated to the diffusion of knowledge concerning velociraptor attack prevention.

Know the Enemy

The velociraptor is a bipedal carnivore with a long, stiffened tail and can be distinguished from other dromaeosaurids by its long and low skull, with an upturned snout. It bores a relatively large, sickle-shaped claw, typical of dromaeosaurid and troodontid dinosaurs. This enlarged claw, up to 67 millimeters (2.6 in) long around its outer edge, is a predatory device, used to tear into the prey, delivering a fatal blow.

I was going to wait to post this in September, but I was worried it’d be too late for some of you - didn’t want any of our readers getting got because I held back.

Killin me.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden McNugget

I don’t know if you chumps have been watching the Olympiad (as they say in more sophisticated circles). Well, this commercial has nothing to do with it, but I saw it during some soccer broadcast and I wanted to ask somebody this: Isn’t this a slight bit racialist?
