This is the interior of one of the Doppler on Wheels mobile radar trucks — truly an incredible nerve-center of weather data acquisition and processing. Researcher Josh Barnwell sits in the hot-seat in this shot; the images on the screen are actually images from previous storm chases (and represent exactly the kind of data that Vortex 2 is looking for). The little "eyes of the hurricanes" you see on a couple of the screens are actually the radar picking up the "eye of the tornado", which has been dubbed the "tornado vortex" by scientists.

The photo you see here of an otherwordly landscape in Namibia a a quiver tree forest a was taken a few days ago. I am leading a photo tour to this African country, and on this particular evening we had incredibly dramatic sunset lighting (the trees are only slightly enhanced in color from the original). I then combined the landscape with a shot of the night sky that I took the next evening at Sossusvlei where the largest sand dunes in the world are located. The sky was as crystal clear and stunning as I had ever seen it a it seemed like I could touch the Milky Way.

Scott spent four days in a hide at the edge of a pond in Kangasala, Finland, to get this photo of an osprey. He said: "This location near the city of Tampere is arguably the best spot on earth to photograph this behaviour. Twelve hours per day in the hide produced this image on the second day."

Tesla in his Houston Street laboratory. Caption for this photo in Electrical Review, March 29, 1899 reads: "The operator’s body, in this experiment, is charged to a high potential by means of a coil responsive to the waves transmitted to it from a distant oscillator."
