Halcyon Concept Car

Designer Ralph Tayler-Webb?s inspiration for the Halcyon concept came from his love for nature and the desire for tranquil roads, as are seen in most luxury car advertisements. Inspired by the Owl, the Haylcon is clean, efficient, ultra-lightweight and eerily silent. The concept utilizes electric power for clean and silent motion, while its aerodynamic structure with covered wheels and a tapering teardrop cabin reduces air drag to a minimum.

With a structure made from porous aluminum foam, the Halcyon mimics the owl?s hollow bones and makes it surprisingly light for its generous volume. Aluminum foam also benefits from high impact and acoustic absorbency, keeping the occupants safe and (without) sound. As part of the concept?s research and development, Ralph photographed and studied birds in flight, carving an owl in hardwood and sketching them in charcoal and with watercolors. The final model was created entirely out of hand in clay and then cast in resin to maintain what Ralph believes is an ?organic form with something instinctive, quite intangible, but very special,? and we completely agree with that.

Taken for A Ride - Documentary

Taken for a Ride is an amazing documentary by Jim Kleina and Martha Olson that documents the efforts to derail mass transit in America. Ever wonder why the U.S. has the worst mass transportation system in the industrialized world? Using historical footage and investigative research, this film tells how GM fought to push freeways into the inner cities of America, and push public transportation out.

New York Drivers, the Angriest

YouTube Preview Image

I would be mad too if I had to root for A-Rod.AA Every once in a while there is a straight faced news story with a whole bunch of gems.AA We’ve gleaned the good glean.

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) a€" New York has overtaken Miami to be voted the U.S. city with the angriest and most aggressive drivers, according to a survey on road rage released on Tuesday.

Miami topped the annual poll for the last four years but voters in 25 major metropolitan areas gave New Yorkers the prize for angriest, most aggressive drivers who tailgate, speed, honk their horns, overreact and lose their tempers.

The response of New Yorkers to bad drivers also helped push the city into the top slot for road rage.

"New Yorkers were most likely to wave their fists or arms. They were most likely to lay on the horn and they were most likely to make some sort of obscene gesture," said Michael Bush, of the marketing and consulting company Affinion Group, which commissioned the survey.

Dallas/Fort Worth came in second as the worst road rage city followed by Detroit, Atlanta and Minneapolis/St. Paul. Miami ranked a distant seventh.

"In Washington, D.C., four percent of drivers admitted to slamming into another driver," said Bush. "They stand out in that one particular category."

How many people are surprised about this one?AA I’m not trying to be funny, but… I’m wondering what percentage of the people surveyed were Haitian.AA I’m just saying.

Escalade on the C Train

These photos are just killin’ me - they HAD to be on myninjaplease!

My favorite part? This little girl isn’t even happy that she’s driving her SUV through the subway. I mean, if I had a car that nice I’d be happier…

Ninjas Don’t Use Doors

Rinspeed is rolling out the diminutive iChange in time for the Geneva Motor Show, which the company bills as "the world’s first car whose body adapts to the number of passengers on board," and everything from the shape-shifting seats to the ignition is controllable with an iPhone.

You’ve go to love the absurdity that gets designed now, all thanks to Apple and the iPhone’s influence on design and pop culture.

From Rinspeed:

An initial walk-around reveals that the concept car has no doors. The entire electrically powered roof sectiona€¦ tilts forward to allow passengers to board. Also gone are such mundane things as a key. Its role is filled by an Apple iPhone, which also controls the most important vehicle functionsa€¦ The energy for the electric motor comes from lithium-ion batteries that are available in two different stack configurations for short- and long-distance driving.
