How to Insult a Computer Programmer
In recent exchanges, members of the faculty have tried in vain to attack other Computer Scientists and disparage their work. Quite frankly, I find the results embarrassing — instead of cutting the opponent down, many of the remarks have been laughably innocuous. Something must be done about it because any outsider who hears such blather will think less of our department: no group can hold the respect of others unless its members can deal a devastating verbal blow at will.
This short essay is an effort to help faculty make their remarks more pointed, and help avoid wimpy vindictives. It explains how to insult CS research, shows where to find the Achilles’ heel in any project, and illustrates how one can attack a researcher.

The Other Side of Apple
Green Momentum has a great post on the lack of concern for the environment by computer giant, Apple. Corporate responsibility has seemed to have taken a backseat to Apple’s power over the masses. They refuse to paricipate in green surveys and in a recent report, "The Other Side of Apple," led by NGOs Friends of Nature, Green Beagle, and the Institute of Public and Envrironmental Affairs, it found the company as being the least responsive to such matters. Apple should be leading the way, not bolstering sales and leaving batteries rotting in garbage dumps.

Sundown, USA
An article expounds upon a new book by an author about America’s Sundown Towns, over at the Washington Post (go figure).A It was a good read and comes highly recommended (both book and article, that is.
If Loewen’s first priority is to unveil what he calls the "hidden history" of sundown towns, his second is to debunk the widely held idea that when the issue is race, the South is always "the scene of the crime," as James Baldwin famously wrote. The incidence of sundown communities in the South, Loewen reports, was actually far lower than it was in a Midwestern state such as Illinois, in which roughly 70 percent of towns were sundown towns in 1970. "This does not make whites in the traditional South less racist than [those] in . . . other regions of the country," he suggests. (From the Post)

Apple now in the Spyware game?
"Essentially, Apple’s patent provides for a device to investigate a user’s identity [and] would allow Apple to record the voice of the device’s user, take a photo of the device’s user’s current location or even detect and record the heartbeat of the device’s user…." [Read all about it- here]

‘Ninja Group’ Mastermind Faces Death Penalty
Most of the times ninjas that are breaking into homes with nun-chucks and such get caught, fans revel in the fact ‘real’ ninjas are on the loose. But this story of a ‘ninja group’ mastermind who helped orchestrate a botched robbery that ended up with Byrd and Melanie Billings getting murdered as the couple’s nine young disabled children hid nearby is by far the worst case of ninjas at work that these webs have ever seen..
