UN Studio Mediatheque, New Orleans
Un Studio, the Netherlands based architecture firm, is currently in the design phase a Mediatheque for downtown New Orleans. Conceptually based on the form of a ziggurat [yes, the Mesopotamian temple/shrine/house of the gods, etc], the mediatheque’s purpose is to act as a ‘tool in re-establishing a balanced ecology between culture and commerce’. The project is intended to provide a mixture of public & private uses, therefore encouraging shared use of spaces and an interaction of the various inhabitants of the building and surrounding area. And it looks pretty sick too.

-model showing how the exterior surface of the ‘zig-zag’ shape of the building will be used for green/planted public space

Locking Coffee Cup
Tired of coworkers and/or roommates using your coffee mug and stealing / breaking / not washing it [or whatever] ? Well, your problems have been solved with ‘Lock Cup’, a lockable coffee mug created by Israeli designer Efrat Gommeh [cool site]. The cup comes with a key [shown above] that corks a hole in its side.AA The idea is [obviously] that only the owner would have the key, so only he/she could use the mug…good for replacing disposable mugs at the workplace.

Low-Cost Ocean Homes
article from popularmechanics
Hilbertz hopes to start growing an island there before the end of the year. "We’ll establish our presence there and stake a claim, and see what happens. If anyone challenges us, we have lawyers ready to argue our case. We’ve had so many legal opinions that we decided just to go ahead and see what happens," he says.
